My 1979 Enterprise had a lever: 6-1 lever, with a 4-1 on the end split to the sides, giving 24-1 in total. The problem with the lever was that it only gave 6-1 at the best angle, once you had pulled it on, the power of it dropped rapidly. To avoid this, the wire from the top went through a pulley on the boom to an adjustable position highfield lever on the boom. You could then easily adjust the general tension in the system with the highfield (on/off or multiple position), and use the 24-1 kicker for the final adjustments. |

How about something like this? Opens up the cockpit like a gnav, but doesn't have the same effect on the mast. I know that some XODs use something similar - dangling a big bit of aluminum below the boom. Much easier in carbon.

The 'temple' vang. The 12s were shouting about having invented it a while ago which was the first time id come across it (though theyd been around for some time before)
I'll be having one if/when I build a new boom... Extra cockpit space is always a plus but im not a fan of the gnav at all |

That's a new term on me. Do you have the url of a description or photo, please? The gnav, it's true, is not optimal for sail setting, but it's a small price to pay for loads more space on those boats that need it. If I sailed an Osprey or FD I wouldn't dream of using one, but I'd have thought that the gains in crewing efficiency on a Cherub (including keeping the weight of both crew members forward in the tacks and keeping the crew happy) would outweigh the slight loss of power in certain conditions. |

It was in responce to eds picture which seems to be intermitantly deciding not to display. The 'temple' is the name the 12s seem to be using, named (I think) after the first person to fit one... Im sure there are other names as its not a new concept by any means. |

I'm afriad I can't see either of the pictures - can we have the url or can you upload it using the button in the top right of the form (make sure its only about 200k please). Meanwhile, what's the disadvantage of the gnav? |

Here's the picture - it was too large. Now I think we can see the problem with this design, the forces at and around the gooseneck are very high requiring massive construction which is heavy. |

Interference with the sail, mast bend, drag... I never really found room that much of an issue as a Cherub crew. |
