So what you guys are saying is that your Int.14 centreboards are Cherub technology from the 60's? At least try and keep up!

Come on, fair play Strawberry, whilst there was a time not so long ago when the 14s were years if not decades behind the Cherubs, they have caught up now. Edited by JimC |

I'm surprised it pays to have a board so long. At the speeds of those boats I would have expected a smaller one would have been adequate. Its quite short on a 800 but on the other hand the 800 dies once the breeze gets down to 5mph and perhaps that's why? Its noticeable that the 4000 will still keep going when the 800 fades and it has a much bigger board. But is it the board, or a little more rocker or that the cockpit doesn't fill with water?

I think the limiting factors for board performance is largely speed coming out of a tack and hanging on startlines. You have to have low speed capability for that, then its a question of minimising the drag for sailing at speed when you've probably got more foil than you really need. Trying to tack a boat with insufficient board in light airs is a frustrating experience best not repeated... Trust me on this! |

It's not unusual just now for 505's to have centreboards that are too long to be full retracted..... High aspect ratio foils are all the rage...

the 14 boards raise and cant. with a rope lead out to the racks. so if you can adjust them. and remember that the 14s were arround and ahead of the game for anlong time (traps asymetric kites foiling rudders carbon rigs) so look what the cherubs have "taken" from the 14s |

Pauls adjustable foiling rudders were a significant advance on the orginal Moth concept, I'll give you that, but everything else you list came from elsewhere. I challenge you to list one thing that the 14s were at or ahead of the world state of the art between 1965 and the amalagamation with the Australian 14s. But full credit to the class for what happened with and since the amalgamation - they did what needed to be done, effectively scrapped the entire fleet and brought the boats up to the state of the art. It took a lot of courage to do that and they deserve huge amounts of credit for doing it. I don't think any other class has taken on such a root and branch change and got away with it.
