What's the point of the Alto? Slower than a conventional 505 and even so, the 4000 is a good comparible assymetric to the 505 speed and performance wise. Seems to be dumbing the boat down a bit. I like the 505 because of the boat it is, if it wasn't a symetric it would lose all appeal to me. As it stands, the 505 is a High Performance symetric boat, convert it to assymetric and you get a medicore, over weight assymetric, plenty of room in the market for those.... Lozza was right on another thread, putting self-tackers etc onto a 505 will just ruin the boat and will be pretty crap compared to the original boat.

Twice as easy as a 505 and only 3% slower - sounds a reasonable deal to me.

Not everyone wants to invest the time and effort to sail a 505 perfectly. In fact, looking round my club I'd say 90% of members are in that category.

So if someone doesn't want a 505, they should buy an RS400? Eh?

Of the two, I think I'd prefer an Alto to an RS400 - all that hiking - no thanks. And the Alto is not only faster than a 400, but I'd guess easier too.

It's a new class, and as I see it one with a niche.

if someone doesn't want a 505 buy something else personally i wouldn't want an alto because at the end of the day its just gonna be another asymetric smod which doesn't require too much skill to sail.If thats what you want go for it.I agree that not everyone has the time/patience/bank balance/mentality/fitness/technical mindedness to sail a 50h too its potential and that isn't their fault. So go and buy a pretend 5oh "the alto" its just I won't.P.S. the 50h is my favourite boat ever!so i'm just biased !!!Keep your cherubs 12's 49ers etc if I could have any boat whatsoever give me a brand new all carbon van munster anyday!!!!and if I cant have one of them I'll go without!! unless you need a crew for your shiny new 14

Isn't the 505 a chopped Coronet? Surely that's a precedent? Tongue

But the coronet was never a fully established class.

Can't see the point of an alto, if you're going to upgrade an old boat, there are better ways of spending the money (big kite, new high aspect board) and still be relatively competative.  Keeping the symetric would make the boat faster down wind and the adjustable rig would make it easier to depower.

7544 at the worlds was getting results in the 80's and all the owner had done was get a half decent set of sails with a 6m spinny.

If you're going to fiddle with a boat, you normally try to make it better.  Bit difficult to do this to a boat which is close to perfection (IMO)
