From time to time there is a push to go 3 on the wire. If you think about it it allows for a mix in the size of crews. If you are a big and moderately mobile skipper, steer off the wire, if you are a little skipper or are not that flah on the wire, sit in. It also allows 505/470 or what ever skippers slip in with little change of skills - except the size of rig and kite of course.
