Bow and stern (or a tricolor) is fine for a boat of the projection's size

Sorry for endless questions - do CAT4 navigation lights include a 'steaming light' or are bow and stern lights sufficient?

SSSN is certainly a crude metric but I was under the impression that STIX is more scientific. Correct me if I am wrong (wouldn't be the first time!) but STIX requires an inclination test and therefore measures the actual righting moment of the vessel and its angle of vanishing stability. Modern series built boats have this data as it is required by the EU and so is measured by the builders. For boats like ours you'd have to pay for an individual inclination test - not cheap! |

IMHO it is a shame that sssn and stix are such a crude tool for race organisers to lean on.(hide behind?) So called stability criteria (and to some extent IRC) have slowed the rate of development of small to medium sized yacht over the years. The P762 is not such a radical boat as say aTP52 but gets hammered to death in comparison. SSN and STIX seem to take no account of the fact that in heavy weather racing crews reef their craft to suit the conditions to maintain best performance. As has been said before (ad nauseum) vested intrests and conservative attitudes in the higher echelons of yachting will always dominate how thing develop in the mainstream....After all, apart from the few of us (elightened ones?) who wants to see a £15K investment keep winning races over those who have invested 10 times that in their heavy & slow (but safe?) boats... The RYA Sportsboat rule is fine and dandy if there is a sensible sized local fleet of sportsboats for race organisers to lay on races for but useless away from major centres... What is perhaps needed is a relaxing of the inshore/sheltered water regatta rules on SSN and STIX for an experimental period.....and /or maybe a better definitions of what are inshore / shelted waters?

Tim You are entirely correct in your statement. Rorc introduced the reduction of various boats SSSN along with their Fudge Factor adjustment ability to move certain boats hull factor based on no data what so ever...in order to prevent silly people entering long offshore passage races in small sportsboat type boats. (P762 included in this). Very frustrating!! as the 762`s sea keeping qualities are quite good despite being a dit on the damp side. We are hopefully doing more offshore if race comittee allows... Better start handing out the snorkles! |

Running water is actually very simple - a collapsable water tank with a
manual all in one tap/pump. Just don't put anything in it. If anybody gets a projection to Cat 3 I'll be amazed. Since the SSSN adjustment was dropped and it's base only we have to find 3 more points somewhere. Short of massively reduced sail area or a new keel I can't see it happening! |

You can get those temporary nav lights, they are about 15 quid each. Its interesting looking at CAT 3. I think my 762 isnt far off it with its full regalia, most of the spec could be reached with a little work. You need running water which could be rigged up I'm sure. The only problem is the SSS/STIX, its so low on the 762. |

Hi Chic
The Cat 4 monohuls document is [4350">.pdf">here It says they need to be shown at the appropriate times but I'm not sure you'd pass an inspection if they weren't mounted. I did an event a bit back that was Cat 4 minus nav lights which makes me think they would need to be mounted. Very simple job though and not expensive! |

Thanks Tim, think I can manage that!
We don't currently have NAV lights - I'm not quite sure from the regs whether you need them even if they're not used or whether you only need to SHOW them if you are racing past nautical sunset. Any opinions would be welcomed. Chic |

Hi Chic Cat 4 not a problem - a fitted bucket is all you need to comply. This can be one of the buckets required in the safety regs with a fixing point on it - a couple of bungee loops you slide it into will suffice if they hold it there. |
