Mx Ray certainly isn't laser speed upwind. Think topper and you'll be closer.

By all accounts the Stealth is only laser VMG in <8 and >15 kts DDW as well.

Adding a foot to a boat makes a big difference. Adding
two foot is a huge difference. Length detracts from
responsiveness, but short length reduces speed when
displacement sailing. It also reduces wetted surface
area when planing and will plane sooner. T-foils affect
this a lot but 200's get away with it, as do N12's*. A lot of boat designing is about compromising. I think 13
feet is fairly middle of the road in terms of being
crazy and not being crazy enough.

* I don't know about this recent N12 t-foil thing and
how it's working out. It's certainly worked for the
Cherubs.

Why is 14 too long? Surely 14ft a better compromise overall?

14ft is too long because he sails a Cherub ... Its only the talented ones that don't need to take their shoes off and count using their toes!

Looking at the Stealth I'm not sure that it offers much more than the Mx-ray. Both Laser pace upwind and very quick down...

Seeing that pic reminds me of just how shocked I am that you gave up that
mainsail for the North sail you now have.

area in the jib then you'll be onto a winner. The jib
would help with upwind speed and allow you take that
area out of the main and put it at a much lower level. A
stayed rig is the way forwards as well, with caps. This
would allow you to properly control the mast and tune it
to the sailor. You could then also go mast head kite
allowing you to get a much longer luff length and a
shorter foot which would make gybing easier and the kite
would have less drag. With that set up you could be
sailing at much hotter angles and working the apparent a
lot more. Make it 60 kilos all up and I
would buy one!

Of course this could all be b**locks due to just
rambling of the top of my head.

I have to say i agree with all of that. Although i can't profess to know the technicalities of it all in massive detail it sounds right to me.

Why didn't they just do that? Sounds like a canoe style rig with a racked hull to me which can't be a bad thing...
