Well I'd also like on the agenda..

Hiking S/hndrs
RS300, Solution, Blaze, Phantom (For my pal)

and
Trapezoid S/H
RS700 MPS Contender

Not sure how many I could get through in a day.

But I bet we could find owners of those boats on this forum and organise
a kind of swap meet..

Sort of On the water Class Association get together like the dinghy show
only wet.

Pic somewhere pleasant and central (Like here in the South East )

Check the weather forcast, then hitch up and away using this forum as
the final 'it's on or off'

Our club organised a Try A Boat Day in conjunction with Laser. Remember that it is in the manufacturers' interest to generate sales from such events.

It was a couple of years ago now, but I recall a Vago, Bahia and maybe a Stratos(?) could be booked for trial sails. Unfortunately, it was a very windy day (not ideal for an intro into any design), and that put quite a few people off who would have normally tried the boats on offer.  Given the "newness" of these boats, it would have been excellent for anyone wanting to try a new two-up dinghy. This sort of showcase gives a good comparison, especially if someone is thinking of changing classes. It would be a bold thing for two or more manufacturers to go head-to-head on the same day, though...

Open Meetings or Regionals held at different locations are good from a Class promotion point of view, but most owners don't want a load of freeloaders from the club they are using as a venue hijacking their boats. Some classes are friendly and more than happy to talk about their class, but some quickly put the covers on and drive off once the day is over!

Well I for one have always offered my boat to people to have a play in to see what they think and I'll continue to do so with every boat I'll own in the future.

Datchet SC had an 'on the water boat show' where you could trial sail boats.

It was nice and central, quite well supported by demonstrators (classes & builders), at least for the first year, but hardly any punters turned up! Not sure if it's still going - nothing I can find on their website

Demo days are one thing but comparitive reviews is another.

As GRF says lets get L4000's V3000's 50's RS500 & The Alto, ISO etc. all together at one place, let everyone sail each others boat and then let them comment to Y&Y resident hack who can put together a review.

It would be much the same as the ISAF boat selection tests albeit without the politics and would provide prospective newcomers with a much better understanding of the pros and cons.

If you include a couple of testers who havnt sailed these boats but are thinking of purchasing one within the mix of testers then the review should be well balanced, rather than a "my class is better than yours" bunfight which I expect Y&Y are worried about creating.

Given the size of the review it could perhaps be rolled over 2-3 issues, with a different type of boat tested per quarter, that gives time to organise the event.

So we'd have:

* Lightweight hiking Singlehanders
* Medium hiking Singlehanders
* Heavyweight hiking Singlehanders
* Lightweight/Junior hiking doublehanders (No spinni)
* Medium to Heavyweight hiking doublehanders (No spinni)
* Lightweight/Junior hiking doublehanders (incl. spinni)
* Medium to Heavyweight hiking doublehanders (incl. spinni)
* Trapeze Singlehanders
* Single Trap doublehanders
* Twin trap doublehanders

Cats can and should be included within the above categories, as they are essentially dinghies (just with stabilisers ). Ok some inland venues are restricted by backward thinking water companies on what they can and cant sail but if someone is looking for a twin trap boat to sail with their teenage child, why just narrow it down to RS800, when the Spitfire or even F18 would also be suitable.

So lets ave it!

Does nobody organize mass boat 'demo days'?

Everyone turns up at the local res or beach, manufacturers are invited to
bring their demo boats and everyone has a bit of a go in each others
boats.

We do it all the time for windsurfing and kite surfing.

Typical one back in the day would be Boards at Bewl.

Maybe they should get together and try one out Boards & Boats at Bewl..

All y'all have to do is turn up with your kit, no trailing your own boat
unless you're a sponsored rider in which case we get to trash your boat.

I think a few of us have been saying this for a long time but it seems to fall upon deaf ears, either that or there is a fear that manufacturers will not provide a boat for test if they suspect it is going to be criticised. That said there are probably enough owners out there who would be willing to turn up, should they be invited, to perform a comparitive boat test with their own boat, meaning that the manufacturer needn't be involved. I guess class associations could help although to an extent they are probably just as cagey as the manufacturers.

And their lies the problem.

I could read a test of a 49er written as it only could be by folk capable of

conditions pertinent to me and it would be wrong.

What's more, I doubt the regular Y&Y Team would even wish to comment
on a boat like that for fear of higher echelon ridicule which again would
be wrong, the folk that need to read tests could never sail to the same
standard as Pro guys which in a way is why reviews and chitter chatter on
forums like this, populated by middle of the road enthusiasts are actually
more relevant.

My base line has been transparent all along, a mediochre boat handler,
but a good tactical 'sailor' albeit from another branch of competition
sailing. My experience limited to Single wire Assys but with the
requirement of Sea Handling and often extreme at that.

So in a way any test they carry out in Chichester Harbour or on Datchet or
QM will not necessarily be relevant, but I would read with interest a
comparison say of Iso's, L4000's V3000's 50's RS500 & The Alto with
maybe a comedy addition of the Vago to illustrate a potentially good boat
ruined by 'modern' manufacturing convenience.
