As ever, Mike Peyton put his finger on life's realities: To an extent, Rick is probably right - most classes have their particular appeal, which may or may not fit our requirements at the time (I can think of one or two exceptions, mind). But digging back, I find that way back in '91, I wrote to Y&Y pleading for more objectivity in their tests - 'stable', 'fast', 'exciting' - they're all relative terms, applicable to a Laser... or to an 18 foot Skiff - it all depends on your base-line. My 'solution' at the time was to test new boats back to back against a comparable older class which most of us might have experienced. E.g. test the Solution alongside a Laser, then terms like 'more stable', 'faster' have some relevance. A certain other publication does multi-boat tests, but not terribly well imho - there's so much verbiage you don't come away with a very clear idea of the relative merits. German magazines, of course, would have tables rating each quality out of 10, but that's maybe not really practicable. |

Y&Y seem to find the best in all boats; I have never seen one given a Clarkson style panning... You may argue that is because all boats meet their design brief ... |

It may not be really fair, but what is the point of reviewing boats - or anything else - if everthing gets glowing praise?

Not sure that is really fair. Back when the Kestrel was reviewed I bet their monthly revenue from Richard C Hartley Boatbuilders (as it was then) was a pittence. |

There's one question that has always nagged me about the AltO. Was the hull mould taken directly off a 505, and the chines added later, or was the mould made from scratch? If it was taken from a 505, is the Westall estate not owed some money?

Maybe it is just that to sailing enthusiasts, a day on the water testing any boat is better than a day in the office proof reading, so they all get great reviews. As I'll be spending the day typesetting and proof reading, I can safely say I'd rather be testing. Even a Bosun would do!

I've certainly never seen a boat get a bad review in Y&Y. They even gushed over the "new" Kestrel a few years back. Not that the Kestrel is an awful boat, just a bit ordinary, the Vauxhall Vectra of the sailing world. Y&Y absolutely loved it though. Nothing to do with the advertising revenue? No, I thought not...

Well doug, I'm sorry to hear about that (and the lack of essential endowment common in Medway dwellers). I do agree about the scenario if it is true, that no boat ever receiving a bad review doesn't then help if a real gem happens along. Has it always been the case that Jeremy Evans runs these tests? He is a proper journo of real integrity, at least he was back in the day I'd find it difficult to believe he'd be party to all that. |
