I'm probably about to sell my merlin rocket and buy a Winder fireball.

I sail with my girlfriend who is an experianced helm/crew 5'3'' and 10 stone, I have loads of experiance sailing mostly helming but some crewing in everything mostly in cherubs, scorpions and merlins recently. i'm 5'8'' and 13 and a half stone. We're both fit.

We want a boat what is competative on handicap but also has a big and active open circuit with good class racing, it needs to be a competative boat at national level despite our low budget. One of the reasons for selling the merlin is the running costs and the cost of upgrading to a newer boat.

There is also 20ish fireballs at our local club.

Budget of £4k anyone got any worthwile sugestions of an alternative class? I'm fairly convinced that the fireball is the boat, but wandered if anyone has any worthwhile alternatives.

Do you reckon the running costs are significantly different on anything? Sails cost roughly the same amount of cash for any class, so do worn out ropes, replacement fittings etc etc... Insurance varies a bit, but probably chicken feed compared to what you spend on fuel doing a circuit...

About the only thing that seems to make much difference is that fully battened sails don't clap out with batten poke so fast as soft and semi soft ones... New boats, sure the prices vary a good bit, but I'm unconvinced about running costs: if you use it it will wear out!

Runing costs for me are mostly fittings and rope and any breakages. Sails aren't an issue inless its a smod as i'm a sailmaker.

Go for the fireball - they are great boats, you're in the weight range, and there's local competition/knowledge.  Surely they are the obvious choice?
the same, but different...

If you get a Fireball it would make more sense for you to crew, being taller and heavier.

Then I'd echo JimC's comments. Why do you think a Fireball is going to cost less to run than a Merlin?
