Using the extraordinary blunt implement of Y&Y Championship turnouts to indicate health, this is my list of classes who are not having a happy time numbers wise... I wonder what they will be up to at the show?
What I've done is compare the average turnout according to the chart from 1998 to 2002 with the average turnout from 2004 through to 2006. I dropped a few records out of the averages which were high turnouts due to worlds. Otherise the Europe would be there and the i14 higher.

ClassName     Turnout Change
Laser2      -67%
RS600       -56%
RS400       -43%
Buzz        -41%
Byte        -41%
Snipe       -39%
B14         -34%
I14         -33%
505         -32%
Wayfarer    -27%
Hornet      -25%
Laser4000   -24%
ISO         -22%

The I14s I would imagine would be completely unconcerned. They were going through a brief period of fashionability back at that time which isn't really much to do with long term popularity. At the moment they're very much at their natural long term level.

Interesting that there are more SMODs than traditional one designs, and of course the Byte has already made a change to hopefully address things.

Well the buzz with its new sail plan and minor changes to the deck layout as well as a centreboard option (although ive heard thats always been an option), may very well be a good turning point for the buzz.  Its just a shame it happens to be competing in a now very competative area.
I think it will be interesting to see how many turn up to next years RS600 national champs, it seems people are struggling to find any second hand (so they're clearly all being snapped up) and last years nationals saw a lot of new faces so 2007 could prove to be a good year.
Although with RS700 prices so cheap that you can pick them up between £3000-£4000, this could potentially damage the "bargain buy" label thats been attached to the 600 for the past couple years.

There is probably some fading classes but you must also consider the fact that some classes are going far from there bases for the nationals.

I can imagine that a nats in scotland would afraid many southcoasters ...

I just missed out on one this week that was sold around 1 day of the ad going up :(

The price of many newer second hand 600s are approaching the 700 which is making me think...

This is what the ISO is showing at the dinghy show.

ISO with Hyde sails

It is no longer a Topper boat and a brand new boat will be on the stand at the show, made by Rondar. I defy anyone who doesn't think it is at least worth a look?

Same for the Buzz.

Those sails do indeed look far superior to the original ones!

The wayfarer scene i think has been damaged over recent years due to the laser 2000.  Though im not sure what the wayfarer could do to rectify this.  Something like sticking a carbon rig on it, i just cant see doing the boat any good.  Some could say, give a mordern style sail plan but the people in the class are there because they like a conventional sail plan.
However, even with their class attendence dropping, I cant see the wayfarer fading out of existence.  It still has a good club following, not to mention they have a world championship and (i think) a european championship.

My beloved B14 will see a marked increase in turnouts for the nationals.

However, take into account that some classes sail for the Worlds rather than the nationals.  The International Classes on that list (B14 included) have little to worry about as it is the numbers at the Worlds that indicate health.

National classes with dropping figures at National champs should be more worried.
