I just got a Magic Marine Ultimate harness - amazingly supportive compared to my old nappy harness and I don't find it restrictive on the 29er - best harness I have had. Australian Sailing did a great review of a whole load of harnesses back in June last year - I think you can order back copies of articles on-line - and that gives both great advice and because they had 5 reviewers trying out about 10 harnesses you get a great feel for what was going on - far better than a single-harness test. If you can't get it on-line PM me your email address and I can scan the article for you when I get back home in about 2 weeks...

Yes they do, some are very padded with an adjustable lumbar support, some are very basic. My new P&B one is very basic. I used it helming my Cherub at the weekend and it was very supportive whether flatwiring or highwiring, the actual back panel itself does come a long way up. I've used it once as a Fireball crew and did not notice any real issues when bagging the kite, although this will always be the restrictive point of any harness, along with swimming!! |

OK, I'm also looking around at harness options - unfortunately not for any specific individual (just whoever I can get to go up front on the day!), so there probably won't be an ideal choice. However one aspect I was giving thought to - which I'm surprised no-one has mentioned - is the matter of 'back' style: do some have a more rigid construction to the back panels than others? In which case they may be good on a skiff when you're up and out (or at least standing) a lot, but a bit restrictive when bent over stuffing the kite back in the bag? What's the opinions? Is this also an area to pay attention to when choosing? Col Edited by ColH |

I had a G-belt (inherited it with my first Hornet) it was old when I first got it almost 20 years ago and it was strappy. Jim we just have different experience of harnesses I'm afraid. |

They used to be the only kind there was. The strange things with straps round your legs that catch on everything are bizarre new-fangled things to me... Back then the hot harness to have was a Gayle-Heard G-belt. I note with some sadness that the long retired Mr Heard recently passed on. Edited by JimC |

I don't wear trunks under my wetsuit either (ever since a rather unpleasant incident that meant I had to walk like a cowboy for a couple of days - 'nuff said) but I do wear an adjustable nappy harness. As Iain says, a bit of careful arrangement is required in the changing room. I also sail a Contender. |

Ok this thread is really starting to hit gutter level now!! I would say comfort in a nappy harness is all down to trunk settings and carefull arrangement of chandlery in the changing room prior to putting on wetsuit!! (PS Either that or your average Contender sailor has the kind of tackle you'd expect to see swinging around on a grand national winner!) (PPS gratuitously nicked from Blackadder) (PPPS Did I mention I used to sail a Contender????) Edited by Iain C |

Personally I'd replace trunks (don't wear any) with harness in that statement - which is why I'm not a fan of nappies. The big man upstairs intended them to be like a Contender sailor (dangle freely) and that's the way I like it. |

But you're not the average sailor are you Jim? I mean they've only caught on in the mainstream recently. Edited by Matt Jackson |
