Yes I din't mention BBSCFaithfull was out in a very up-to-date 14. Awesome power downwind it made the 4000 look very tame, however he did some swiming and we didn't. We must thank Colin Smith of Itchenor and BBSC for bringing it along.

Went 14 sailing today on one of the new 14s from itchenor. It was sooo fast.
Should of seen redbacks face when we aproached the second beat mark with him and to his dissapointment i hoisted the kite and we just let fly! ![]() |

I was over on the west coast camping on a beach this weekend.
This morning we had a gentle 2.4knots of breeze..... Inside the damn tent. On top of the nearest dune it was a steady 25-30knots and regularly gusting over 40. Must have been some good sailing out there for those of you lucky enough to be a little more sheltered... |

Hey have you noticed that slightly risque words get subtly corrected when you post. For instance my last post included would spelt not that different from "peeved". Clever.

Great racing at the Bough Beech Icicle today. More wind than forecast (about 18mph) so well powered up which you have to be in a 4000 to get anywhere. We made an average start but pulled clear of the slow boats to be amongst the flying machines at the windward mark (except there was a Wayfarer there too). Cracked the best route down the long reach to the leeward mark and picked off the 400s there on both laps 1 and 2. We are definitely sailing better than we used to since 400s would beat us on the water - now they don't - just on handicap! We made few mistakes even though the 2nd beat of our figure of eight course was very shifty and so came 8th out of about 35 boats. Much to our chagrin (polite word for peeved off) we were beaten on handicap by CarshaltonFC and BNS in a Laser2000. Enjoyed it though. |

Sat in the bar this weekend watching the wind go from 0 to 15 kts and through 360 degrees almost every 15 minutes as the clouds drifted past...gotta love being this close to the equator!

Not much wind on Sunday morning on the Medway and so I went out single handed on the 4000 to see how the new 59er is shaping up in the hands of Tim who has been sailing Ospreys for years. He looked happy but capsised and got in a bit of a mess with the trots on the way back in. The tide was fierce is probably his excuse but the truth is that when you remove the dagger board on a skiff type boat it can go anywhere. The afternoon was better with a moderate easterly and we were fully powered up and made it to the first mark in the lead. It was a race through the creeks - effectively a beat down the river against the tide and soaking deep most of the way back. It took quite a while for the 800 and MPS to get past us so we thought we might do well. After about an hour we got to the windward mark and put the kite up. There wasn't a lot of power and we couldn't get the thing going properly. We had rounded with a Phantom which had started 20 minutes before us. Being high tide (a very high tide) the river was very wide so we took a very long board out to one side and came back again about 15 minutes later to find ourselves still alongside the Phantom. Something was wrong and it was weed on the board. Once cleared the boat felt much better and we left the Phantom behind but realised the 59er had taken quite a chunk out of us. We had anticipated that the 59er is going to be a difficult boat for us on the deep reaches but with weed on our board it was doubly so. The 800 and skiff were now miles ahead. Fortunately the last legs were a bit tighter with the kite and so we pulled away from the 59er and the Phantom Canoe and other boats were left well behind. We came 6th out of about 40 odd boats and so were well p***sed off (disappointed) all because we'd done about 15 minutes with weed on the board. Its bad enough trying to get the feel of the right angle but hopeless with weed as well. We have resolved to check more often next time we feel the boat isn't going quite right. |

Well, we got a pleasant sailing breeze from the East for the first time on a
Sunday in a long while. Blowing about 8- 12 kts and relatively flat (though nothing like you inland boys know as flat). I managed to crack single handed trapezing whilst larking around waiting for Steve to get changed, just like snowboarding, its easier riding regular than fakie, making Port my favoured left foot forward tack. Starboard is just a little trickier, I remember this from the Musto, had the same problem with that. So, given it wasn't that windy Steve took the helm, to give me the wire practise I bought the boat for in the first place, we found out a bit more about this boat today. It works just like an old windsurfing round board, letting it heal over as if we were "railing" a round board actually improves the upwind performance. Here we've been trying to sail it flat (cos that's what the old text books used to say, (I've still got an old copy of Start to Win by Eric Twiname)and in fairness it works better that way when its windy. But in medium wind the 12 knots we had today, heeling it gets an extra couple of windward degrees and more speed off the foil. Y'all will probably come back and say you know it, but I haven't read anything so far that says that, so excuse me telling y'all how to suck eggs, we are after all trying to learn how to stay up front. Today again we creamed the start then screwed up the first beat by over standing, we went round about 7th cocked up the down wind legs, tacking down wind into an oncoming tide and a very deep reach we made a pigs ear of the angles, and were in the teens by the leeward. However by then we'd discovered our upwind technique and a couple of shifts, then understanding and letting the tide do its work got us back in contention. A three sail tight top reach but the tide allowing us to stay low and foot off beneath them all gave us third round the gybe, but then it all went down the toilet as the wind dropped and we were wallowing down a 2nd reach that had become a run and the little 3k sucked the water as we awaited the inevitable. The beginner in the lazer radial asking us which mark she should go to next as she cruised past had us slashing our wrists so the bilges ran red. Edited by Graemef |
