Erm... Niether of my 2 600's are that new so you might expect a bit of a dribble after a sail or two... not at all; neither 609 (thats right, ancient!) or 790 leak at all, not one drop after months of sailing. I might be wrong but i think thats pretty good going for some fairly old boats. 609 has a bit of history, it doesn't look pretty (lets face it, how ugly can a 600 get?!) but it has managed to put up with a fair amount of abuse and still no leaks what so ever. I'd say thats impressive, and some great building. Personally i love the 600, it's a beast! Really light and REALLY responsive! However as has been said before it is a challenge, and would be even more so on a small piece of water. The contender is also great fun to sail, although can be a bit of a dog in light winds (all boats are really, people just won't admit it ![]() ![]() The single best piece of advice for choosing a boat is to try before you buy. Other people opinions may be helpfull but you will never know what its really like untill you try yourself. Cheers Fergus Edited by 29er397 |

[QUOTE=combat wombat]I'll happily take on a 300 in my Contender! I got the impression (when I tried to buy one not too long ago) that there is probably more demand than supply, but that applies equally to the 300. As mr Blaze (always) says, try a few boats and see which you like best! |

The older 600s were built by Ovingtgon Boats, so if I was to buy one, I'd look at getting an older boat due to the fact that we haven't had any problems with the 49er. Regardless of age, would ensure the boat has superspars mast and the foils are properly alligned and faired. Edited by 49erGBR735HSC |

I sailed a 600 wasnt a big fan to be honest, i much prefered the 300. In terms of what you get for your money a contender is a better bet, after all we all know what LDC stands for and all the 600's i've seen leak like a siv.

That looks suspiciously like Porthpean to me....am I right? If so I would call it more than a mini fitness test (having pulled a fireball up there every day for a week)! Paul |

I've never sailed a 600, but they do look like fun. I did learn to helm in a Contender though, and it was really good fun, the boat is easily fast enough but controllable.Learning to sail something like this is going to be hard enough that I wouldn't think on your size lake you want to be worrying about where the shore is, which makes me think the 600 is to fast. In my opinion I would suggest you go down the Cotender route. I bought mine for £1300 kept it 4 years then sold it on for £1000 1 week after advertising it,and think I could have got more if I'd tried.(I wasn't sailing it so I decided reluctantly to sell it)

Seriously though, Contenders are cheap (mine is always for sale at the right offer) so really offer little investment for very high speed. If you find they are too quick, sell it and lose no money. Fair enough, they are heavier than a 600 so moving about is harder, but I have never turtled my Contender and it comes up very easily from a capsize. I absolutely guarantee you will swim less and learn more from a Contender than a 600 if you are new to helming from the wire. |

Know this might through a spanner in the works a bit, what about an International Canoe? A bit tricky to sail but they do look beautiful boats, there's a real nice one we've spotted sailing out of the Mayflower in Plymouth, really quick upwind.

We have had a couple of 600's sailing on Whitefriars SC just up the road from you, which is about the same size. Neither are out much any more, but one of them did very well in the racing. We also have a couple of regularly sailed Contenders, which also find the lake big enough.
