If you are just down the road from Burghfield SC why not come along some time and try out a few of the classes mentioned. We have a couple of 600's, the occasional 300, and the 'not quite so slow' Phantoms and Blazes, Finns etc. Many will lend you a boat to try in moderate conditions and then you can be the judge ! Nothing like having a go to find out what works for you.
Existing owners, especially those associated with builders, are always biased, exagerate the advantages or speed or practicality of their respective clases - so don't believe too much here from any quarter. Check out all the claims for yourself Why not come down to BSC any Sunday. Its always very busy this time of year with 60-80 boats out, good canteen and lively bar at the end of sailing (and you can hear virtually anything claimed there !) And the forecast for this weekend looks a bit breezy so should be entertaining as well. Blaze 720 |

The contender is quite heavy to lug onshore, but its not too bad with some decent trolley wheels, and it's worth it once on the water.
We manage to pull them up the beach & slip at our club(see below) on our own. It's tough at the start of the season, but ends up as a mini fitness test!

We have had a couple of 600's sailing on Whitefriars SC just up the road from you, which is about the same size. Neither are out much any more, but one of them did very well in the racing. We also have a couple of regularly sailed Contenders, which also find the lake big enough.

Know this might through a spanner in the works a bit, what about an International Canoe? A bit tricky to sail but they do look beautiful boats, there's a real nice one we've spotted sailing out of the Mayflower in Plymouth, really quick upwind.

I'll happily take on a 300 in my Contender!
Seriously though, Contenders are cheap (mine is always for sale at the right offer) so really offer little investment for very high speed. If you find they are too quick, sell it and lose no money. Fair enough, they are heavier than a 600 so moving about is harder, but I have never turtled my Contender and it comes up very easily from a capsize. I absolutely guarantee you will swim less and learn more from a Contender than a 600 if you are new to helming from the wire. |

I've never sailed a 600, but they do look like fun. I did learn to helm in a Contender though, and it was really good fun, the boat is easily fast enough but controllable.Learning to sail something like this is going to be hard enough that I wouldn't think on your size lake you want to be worrying about where the shore is, which makes me think the 600 is to fast. In my opinion I would suggest you go down the Cotender route. I bought mine for £1300 kept it 4 years then sold it on for £1000 1 week after advertising it,and think I could have got more if I'd tried.(I wasn't sailing it so I decided reluctantly to sell it)

That looks suspiciously like Porthpean to me....am I right? If so I would call it more than a mini fitness test (having pulled a fireball up there every day for a week)! Paul |

I sailed a 600 wasnt a big fan to be honest, i much prefered the 300. In terms of what you get for your money a contender is a better bet, after all we all know what LDC stands for and all the 600's i've seen leak like a siv.

The older 600s were built by Ovingtgon Boats, so if I was to buy one, I'd look at getting an older boat due to the fact that we haven't had any problems with the 49er. Regardless of age, would ensure the boat has superspars mast and the foils are properly alligned and faired. Edited by 49erGBR735HSC |
