The contender is quite heavy to lug onshore, but its not too bad with some decent trolley wheels, and it's worth it once on the water.
We manage to pull them up the beach & slip at our club(see below) on our own.  It's tough at the start of the season, but ends up as a mini fitness test!

If you are just down the road from Burghfield SC why not come along some time and try out a few of the classes mentioned.  We have a couple of 600's, the occasional 300, and the 'not quite so slow' Phantoms and Blazes, Finns etc.  Many will lend you a boat to try in moderate conditions and then you can be the judge !  Nothing like having a go to find out what works for you. 

Existing owners, especially those associated with builders, are always biased, exagerate the advantages or speed or practicality of their respective clases - so don't believe too much here from any quarter.  Check out all the claims for yourself Why not come down to BSC any Sunday.  Its always very busy this time of year with 60-80 boats out, good canteen and lively bar at the end of sailing (and you can hear virtually anything claimed there !)  And the forecast for this weekend looks a bit breezy so should be entertaining as well.

The 300 does have the massive benefit of speed, and if you think it's hard to master, don't even think of a 600! The 300 is about the same speed as the contender, and would probably beat it on the water a lot of the time. The one at south Cerney is my old boat (318), and has the small rig, so may not be a good one to judge by! I have to say I am very unconvinced by the Vortex- it appears to have a lot going for it, but I've known a few people who've had them, and they just don't seem to do the business (or I might have got one!). Go and try a few boats, I'm sure Garry will let you have a go in his 300- it is probably one of the most underrated boats ever, and should suit the water much better than a trapeze boat.

Thanks to everyone for your input - much appreciated.
My club is South Cerney which has shed loads of Lasers, plenty of Solos, quite a few Flying Fifteens, a few rotomoulds, RS200's, RS400's and an RS300 but I have not seen any single handed trapeze boats - I know this should be a hint but I was kind of hoping it was simply because there were no 'adventurers' there. The RS test centre at Burghfield SC is actually slightly smaller than SCSC so I guess the answer is my club is probably OK but even more of a challenge than an open water RS600 learning curve. 
All the suggestions sound good - the Contender would be fine except it is quite heavy and lugging it up and down our launching area might be an issue considering I want to do my 'swimming' outside of hours and there will be nobody to help. The Blaze is an attractive option but like the Phantom is just too slow for what I want. The RS300 (IMHO) is a (relatively) difficult boat to master but without massive benefit of speed once you have it cracked (cost/benefit). I am not worried about competitive sailing for the coming season so I am prepared for a long (and wet) period of learning. The one other boat that has caught my eye is the Vortex as it is cheap, a good (gentle) introduction to trapeze helming, forgiving of the wind fluctuations and light. It is also pretty quick with the kite. What I will probably end up doing is to take Marks kind offer of test capsize in a 600. If I feel that the step up is too great then I will use the Vortex as an intermediate then graduate next year.

800sqm sounds mighty small full stop.
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

800 m squared sounds mighty small for anything with a trapeze - better to see what is the most sailed class there....nothing worse than trying to trapeze in untrapezable conditions.

The thing I found was that the cheeper 600 tended to be in a much worse state than the contenders for a little more. This was 2 years ago mind. Also the contender is a joy to sail, the 600 is just alright. IMHO
