I'm looking for a cheap [less than £1000] singlehander. I'm 5'5" and 55kg. I've sailed RS200s, Laser 11s, Mirrors and couple of other boats. But I haven't sailed in a bit and more to the point I haven't helmed in a couple of years. If possible I want the boat to be car toppable. Oh and at the moment I not overly bothered if it has a huge following. I just need a boat to get back on the water. At the moment i'm thinking of- -Laser Radial -Laser 4.7 - how 'youthy' is this boat -Byte - what's the C11 rig like? -Lighting Any other suggests? Thanx for the help inadvance. |

Well I am also about 55kg and have a laser with radial and full rigs which I sail occasionally. All round the radial is a really good boat but I find that I am not competative upwind if it is blowing hard. If you are just getting back into sailing this is probably not an issue and it will pay back in light wind. I have to say the byte with the new rig does look cool.

Have a look at the Streaker. Very underated as a light weights single hander IMO. Plus there are some bargains to be had. |

Or a Comet, or, if sailing on a river or small puddle, a British Moth? The choices of small singlehanders are almost endless, and the only way to decide is to go through the Racing Classes review (kindly donated by Y&Y last issue), see which ones appeal and then beg a trial sail off someone. Class association forums will almost always have someone nearby willing to give you a go.

I would suggest the Radial. You can get a good boat for £1000 and due to the size of the class it is easy to sell on afterwards. You are definitely too light for a standard rig. The Byte Cll is a great boat/rig but the class is very small. With the Radial you will find it much easier to find people to race against, get training etc. etc.
