We normally start Radials, big rigs and one or two 4.7s off together, but the two fleets are scored separately. The big rigs do two extra legs. In club championship heats, the two fleets are started separately.
A good Radial can beat most big rigs most of the time, and all of the big rigs when it's very heavy, so it's fun for the fast Radials as they get to play with the big rigs. The less experienced sailors at the back of the pack do tend to fall a long way behind the faster big rigs, though, as we tend to have a few new sailors in Radials and none in big rigs. Chopping and changing to race against other Lasers may be more fun for the individual, but it's utterly unfair to the rest of the fleet to shift from big to Radial and back again, because a 75-80kg guy in a Radial is so quick in big air. Chopping and changing from Radial to 4.7 seems a lot fairer; as far as I known, if you're small enough for a 4.7 you won't be very competitive chopping and changing as you'd lose too much at the top of the Radial's range. |

Our handicap fleet includes both Lasers and Radials. In order to up keep qualifying numbers up, we have the sailor qualifying, not the boat, so Laser helms are welcome to swap rigs when it gets windy, just as a singlehanded Firefly sailor would be quite welcome to swap for a Topper. The only effect on results has been to up the number of race finishers and qualifiers. The good sailors still win, almost always with the same boat in all weathers.

Yes, at our club, if you race a full rig, it is a different boat to the radial or vice versa. It then discourages chopping and changing depending on the wind ( we do though change the handicap for a radial in light winds on the big spring tides to make it more favourable!). So yes a laser handicap fleet in effect. In this way it makes it less frustrating for the full time radial sailor who does not have a different rig. |

If they are altering the rig to suit the conditions they are getting an unfair advantage - so they ought to stick to one rig or accept that they will have two different entry lines. Seems fair to me! Although I have to say we do allow that with the novices in our handicap racing. On the whole, if our members sail a different boat in a series, it is due to sailing a single hander because their crew hasn't turned up and they want to get on the water anyway, rather than trying to get an advantage. |

If you chop and change rigs you are sailing two different boats. So that sailor would get two sets of points. They are two different classes. It is NOT like the 18' skiff where you match your rig to the conditions. It is more like me thinking that it is too windy for my Hurricane and borrowing a Topper for the afternoon. At BYC we race all Lasers off one start but correct the timings for the Radials and 4.7s. The corrected timings then go on one result sheet. I guess it's akin to a Laser handicap fleet. |

How does your club cope with Lasers & Radials racing together? At our club they all race off scratch in a big fleet; just one set of results so the Radials don't get a look in unless it's really windy; and then a few of the big guys change down rigs and thump the small Radial sailors again ... The readers letter in this months Y&Y touches on this ... Racing all together is a good thing as you get more of a fleet feel but seems to me better to extract the Radial results out ... Question is what do you do with the few who chop & change? Rick |
