I'm not a solicitor - my knowledge of the law comes as an electronic engineer who always mindful of liability. My shoulders are pure teflon, steeply sloped and I am keen to keep them this way. I have a feeling that the RYA or ISAF has something to say about racing. If you are an RYA registered club then there is a stipulation as to the provision of rescue craft for an event. Certainly, at BYC if there are no rescue crews available, racing is cancelled. I beleive that we have to observe a certain ratio of rescue boats to competitors. All our rescue crews are have powerboat tickets, most have safety badges as well. If it isn't an RYA stipulation it will be a condition of our insurance. We are a coastal club facing NE with the prevailing wind offshore so we perhaps are in a different circumstances to others. Dunno. If you launch your dinghy in 40 knots I would question whether any insurer would feel obliged to cough up. Any fool can set to sea. It takes a real sailor to know when to stay ashore.

Sorry, second paragraph went a bit wrong. If you insert "at BYC" after the "Certainly" bit it makes more sense. |

Yes, being on the race committee that does include me and I treat it very seriously. I am one of the most relied upon to make the call which is a shame because I like the fresh days. But safety must come first. Re quote from before. An extract from our race instructions.

It's OK. I've got 2. It's an old boat and was originally built with stiff mast. Along the way someone upgraded to soft mast but kept the original. I have now put stiff mast back on boat to get more power. Even if I took you up on your offer I suspect they'll cancel the ferries so how are you going to get here? On your Hurri or Tornado?

We did suggest at the last Euros at Ballyholme that a long distance race to the mainland and back would be good. What is the wind direction. Nice two sail reach there and back. Big jib of course, none of these little SX hankies. For therecord I broke both stiff and light masts in my hurricane days. It's just a knack I've got.
P.s. if any of the boys over there are looking for a green hurricane, I know of one for sale |
