    Posted: 12 Nov 06 at 12:31pm

HI,

Im thinking of buying a laser vago but first i need to get advice on the boat and what its like etc. So how stable is the boat? Its quite narrow for the sail size and i cant tell if its stable. Also can it be sailed easily by young people? I havent seen any weight ranges so if anyone knew the weight ranges that'd be a help. Does anyone know what its like to sail?

Thanks for your time!

I think its designed for young people not sure though, i have sailled them a few times and they're good boats, i did get the feeling they are a bit tippy but its good fun once you get used to them.

There are simply hundreds of views about the Vago on this site.  Go to search and type in "Vago".

Be prepared for some negative comments since the boat was hyped by Laser and it falls short of the hype.  However I suspect its a good trainer for youth who want to get into skif type boats but then so too is the Topper Buz and the V3000.

Yea, i was completly oblivious to the hype before i sailed it the first time and i really enjoyed it but since then ive heard a lot of negative stuff. But its still a good boat and as radback said is suited towards training youths for skiffs.

You must be one of the few at the club who didn't sail the demo boat last year, Redback. Doubt that many/any of those that did would recommend it as a skiff trainer if only on account of the trapezing technique being quite different; most would, however, recommend it as possibly a unique garden feature for holding plants...

XD: tippy at rest, not particually fast for its handicap, mis-marketed and pricy.
ive never sailed a normal one, only the XD

when we sailed it, we found it really hard to sail due to being very unstable at rest/low speeds, and overpowered in a breeze. the reason for this was that i think it was mis-marketed as a boat for teens who wanted to go fast - there is just so much power in that main that when the battens pop (if you can pop them) you are blow over quickly.

several people at my club were taken in by the hype from laser very early on (their boats are numbers: 114,115,116,117) , and have been disappointed with its performance - although they have not quite mastered it yet, it was marketed as 'easy to get into'.

we were attracted to it by the hype but serious;y could not afford it, so went towards a Laser2 instead, which although is supposed to be quite a bit slower than a vago, could generally beat it around the course in any wind (even with the best sailors in the club sailing it).

all these are my personal veiws, and mainly as a result of racing against it in a laser2.

The normal version is similary overpowerd in a bit of a breeze for light crews which makes it strange it was marketed as a youth boat. Not sailed it with a full weight crew and im not really heavy myself so i dont know how it is with 2 adults sailing it.
