It does seem to be a tricky one.  I think possibly jon has it right and maybe making the 470 a mixed open class so there arnt 2 seperate 470 classes racing could well be the answer.  Although if this were to happen, I would be worried of the class ending up with only men sailing it.  Im NOT saying men are better, but there ARE more men than women racing in the world.  And more men means more potential to choose from.  For instance, as far as i was aware last year we had 2 main 470 female teams and 4 male teams.  So that says theres a roughly a 33% chance that a women would be selected over a guy to helm, and the same chance to be selected over a guy as a crew.  And that to me doesnt sound too good.

I tend to agree but losing a medal is a big deal and ISAF will be keen to meet the IOC demands for participation of both countries and gender ...

I guess if you put the Women in the 29erXX, and called the 49er the Men's double hander, you can then scrap the 470. But that means getting rid of the most widespread Olympic double hander. The 2 aims of image and accessability appear to be at odds.

From the outside, the Finn and the Laser are the most similar boats, and the size of sailor needed to do well in the Finn rules out many from far eastern countries, so you might expect it to go. But Olympic sailing is all about lobbying, and the Finn is good at that.

And is Air Rowing really a good Olympic sport? Scrap the windsurfing, bring in the 29erXX, and problem solved!

Oh, and bring in a decent 2 person Women's keelboat, and therefore reduce the number of athletes without loosing fleet sizes.

The President confirmed that for 2012, sailing will have ten Olympic medals and a maximum limit of 380 athletes.

BUGGER!

I still like the idea of making the 470 a mixed class.

Tell you what Rick, you keep up with the optimism and we'll chime in with the cynicism...

Is the reduction in nations represented anything to do with the classes sailed?

Or are the "wealthier" nations with "massive" training programmes and budgets now being represented in more classes than they used to because more people have the funding to get there?

Look at Team GBR - it seems to me we now have representation in about twice as many classes than, say, back in the days of Seoul in 1988 - and if we get more people there then other nations miss out.

The reduction in classes could actually make this worse as the funding and Olympic aspirants become more concentrated squeezing out the smaller nations even further...

...and the chances of ISAF being radical? slim or none, amd slim just left town.

One step forwards, 2 steps back...

The President emphasized the importance of participation and highlighted the need for action to reverse a trend that has seen the spread of sailing nations represented at the Olympic Games fall from 77 in 1996, to 69 in 2000 and then to 61 in 2004.

You may think that but if they are focused on the above and image perhaps they will be more radical ...

... perhaps a total rethink ...

The President confirmed that for 2012, sailing will have ten Olympic medals and a maximum limit of 380 athletes. The Olympic Arena, 'the pinnacle of global sport', is increasingly competitive. In the President's words, 'ISAF has to respond to the requirements of being an Olympic sport.'

Which class will get the chop as there are currently 11 ...

470 men
470 women
Laser
Radial
Finn
49er
RS:X men
RS:X women
Tornado
Yngling
Star

Also ...

Again the President did not shy away from setting out the challenges that lie ahead, 'The image gap between where we are and where we want to be is significant.'
