We have two 29ers at our club neither of which are sailed by youths. They have both had 29ers since they were first arround and love the boats. One guy went to the nationals once and went very rapidly but said the sailing was good (very competative) but the social side was uter rubbish as he came in and all the youths pack up and then get bussed of so there is noone arround.
I think its a real shame more pepole dont get into them as they certainly seem nice enough boats and the 2 boats at largo both seemed to always enjoy there sailing! |

In answer to the RS200 Small adult vs 29er kids, the answer as I see it is simple.
A couple can sail the RS200 if one of them has not great knowledge of sailing and compete together and given most women aresmaller than men a small (ish) couple will probably be the right size for the 200. The 29er is an out and out skiff, as such it requires two very good sailors to sail it competitively. There are not as many couples out there who both sail to a high standard (though there are some) and men and women do not often sail together if they are not a couple (though again this is clearly a generised statement.) This all means that the 29er is most likely to be sailed by two smaller people who are of the same sex, hence the youth boat label. Though the above statements are generalised I would say this is why the RS200 is seen as an adultsboat. If I remember correctly when the 200 came out it was being pushed at the youth market. |

Hit the nail on the head there! There was a combined 29er and Laser 4000 open at hayling a while back and i dont think ive ever felt old before, like i did there. Walking into the briefing with a room full of kids messing around whilst the race officer is struggling to tell us whats what. Boat wise i'd probably prefer to crew a 29er because theres more for me to do but circuit wise, the 4000 wins hands down for social. Doug.H |

This recurring theme is kinda my point… although I take on board the comparisons with the 200 and the skill levels required. Although I would say that it requires no more skill than any other trapeze boat. It’s a great boat that is perfect for any one average or smaller so how do we get the number of adults racing it up to critical mass so that it doesn’t just seem like a fleet for kids! Clearly just from the replies so far there are plenty of people that would like to sail one if the fleet was improved. Perhaps we need to setup a circuit alongside the 4000’s but with a prerequisite for entry being that you must be able to drive yourself to the meeting. Ian |

If you could in way find out just how many people out there have got 29ers and would like to do the circuit if the average was somewhat higher then you could try setting up an adult circuit. But have the same nationals so that the adult fleet and youth fleet are integrated. Then over a period of time integrate the 2 fleets more and more to the point where is just one circuit with a complete range of ages and even better racing. A bit of a long winded plan but if there was enough interest for an 'adult' circuit then im sure it could be done. |

The Pushy Parents is a good point - i can't stand pushy parents, ESPECIALLY pushy mothers.......it just makes me want to cry!
I Don't think the 4000 and 29er are very similar boats at all and i definitely don't agree with intergrating the two classes. The 29ers a great boat and more adults should sail it but i can absolutely understand why they don't - it's a real shame.... |

I've not sailed the 29er much and it's tended to be light winds but I've normally struggled to get enough power out of it to sit on the side so ended up laying on the deck. I'm not particularly heavy - around 12 stone - and was sailing with light crews. Admittedly I wasn't trying to get maximum power out of the rig as they were inexperienced crews but I would imagine a lot of adults just wouldn't be able to do much other than sit in the bottom of the boat unless it was really windy.

Perhaps the reason the 29er is seen as a Youth boat is because it was specifically designed as a Youth boat?
That's not to say other people can't sail it, of course, but the design purpose and marketing were Youth oriented from the start. |
