Does anyone have any experience sailing this boat singlehanded? I see the Buzz as a nice alternative for the RS500.

My 14 is more stable than a 4tonner! But thats probably because its wider.

yeah you dont need much more than a force 2 to get the crew on the wire but dont worry that doesnt mean its got too much power in the rig. Not only is there the weight equalisation but there's so much you can do to depower the 4000 rig. One thing i will say is that it is a very heavy boat and with you 2 being relatively small, it may prove to be a pain in the arse to pull up the shore. Righting from capsize can be done by one person (i can do it at 65kg) but get both of you on the board and it will pop up like any other boat. As for capsizing it in the first place, because of its weight its relatively stable so hopefully not too many problems there. Doug.H |

It semms to need much less weight inland than on the sea. Inland the lightweights have a big downwind speed advantage and don't lose much upwind with good technique. My suspicion is weight helps the relatively bluff bow through the chop. |

Re the 400, if you are 18 stone you won't compete on the sea, but may be OK on a lake if you are good enough. The 400 does have very significantly heavier sheet loads than the 200, particularly in the spinnaker (as it's much bigger!). You would do much better in a 200 at that weight, and I would think they are better on a small lake. Personally, I have been a lightweight all my life, and find it miserable sailing a boat that needs a heavier crew, but that is only my opinion!

At 18 stone i'd say a laser/ V 3000 is possibly the best bet for you.
You could certainly handle a laser 4000 at your weight, and you can have the crew play the main if you want so sheet loads really arnt a problem. But as mentioned before if the 29er's too fast for your lake then so is the 4000 as they are of every similar speed. I think some points on the buzz should be addressed, the buzz is not a dog upwind, its more a problem that it doesnt point well but people try to make it point regardless so it ends up going slower than its potential, so thats not a boat problem, its a sailor problem. And as for attendance numbers, ok maybe the circuit could do with more people but thats a problem that can be solved by enthusiastic class members. And as for the boat only being worth going out in a force 4 plus......to which boat does that not apply to ![]() Dont ever disgard a boat because you dont believe that you aren't the right weight, thats just crazy talk! The crew of the winning laser 4000 at this years nationals is i believe less than 60kg. How much do you think you need to weigh to sail a musto skiff?? Because at this years nats in 10th position out of 48 boats is ant chapman weighing roughly 63 kg. And the musto is a tough fleet! Anyway, happy hunting and buy whatever makes you smile the most! I'm not sure why you think you are to light for the Laser 4000? the equilisation on it is very broad. The charts are on their site you just need to have a look |
