What diameter breather hole do people recommend, and where on the hull do you put it?

I usuallg glue in a bit of 2mm diameter polythene tubing and run it up the back of the front bulkhead and down again so part of it is out of the water in just about any position the boat will stay in.

Silly question but why do you need one? Is it to stop hull stresses due to temperature or similar? For some reason my Fireball has pin-sized holes in all the tank hatches...cherub just leaks like a b**tard so no worris there!

Yes, it's just for pressure equalisation. I recall that my 'ball had pin holes in the hatch covers too, but my new boat doesn't have any hatches! I like Jim C's idea, but now the hull is built, it's a bit late for such sophistication! My guess is that the tiniest of holes would do, but some I've seen are about 3mm (Laser's standard hole size on the L3k). I was wondering if there was some clever thinking behind that, but maybe that's just the drill size that came to hand... |

Yep. Moths can suffer quite considerably on hot days, especially the old wood ones. I never bothered on my Cherub, even though it could build up quite a pressure differential in the floor tanks, owing to it being built like a brick [outhouse], but I did on the old singlehander and will if I build a 3mm ply canoe this winter... |

You know the theory of hot air expanding? Well, if you don't have a breather hole then the air inside the hull will expand during the day and put pressure on the boat, possibly making it explode in extreme conditions (or at least put a leak in the boat). The opposite is true at night time. In short breather holes are essential |
