Ben the best way to learn to sail on small shifty lakes is practice practice practice, I sail my 300 differently to the sea sailors in the fact that I sail for height rather then speed it pays off massively on small ponds but not so good on the sea. It’s always a good idea to watch the top guys at the club and speak to them they will give you the best advice and explain why they do what they do. If you sail a single hander get a hawk and use it with your tell tales. It might be an advantage to try sailing with out the burgee and try sailing by feel? Just a thought and the other fella is right watch the people in front if they head be ready for it.

I;m pretty sure you can appeal that kind of thing to the RYA/ relevant organising authority, if you could be bothered.

Yeah, you say that Stu... But at the student nationals in the Laser 2 fleet a couple of years ago the first 10 or so boats (us included) went the right way but the rest of the fleet didn't. Because it was a student event and supposed to be 'fun' they refused to disqualify the majority of the fleet as it would look bad in the results! Our 3rd place which we should have had was actually given as a 7th because they used our placing from the previous lap to try and make the results work... not happy!

Indeed! Then one boat near the back goes the correct way the RO has to decide whether to DSQ most of the front half of the fleet or not This actually happened at my club

I wouldn't have thought the decision would be very difficult. How can you NOT DSQ someone for not sailing the course, regardless of how many people did it.

Another thing to watch as well as your burgee telling you to do the opposite to the telltails . Watch for when boats just in front get headed, watch for wind patterns on the water and watch for parked boats to give you clues. The flags on our buoys will often tell you your going to be headed just as you get to the mark so have to tack and then change so the rival behind you gets there without the extra tack. One thing I learnt having grown up on the sea is always head up above the mark to give your self space if you get headed as you get near. treat it like it has a strong current on it.

 Downwind look for where the wind is best not always the shortest route.

It all boils down to get your head out of the boat even more so than on the sea.

Most interesting winds we have in a northerly they come from above and srpead out so you can be running in opposite directions a few yards apart.

Its very different to open water sailing but is great fun and certainly improves your wind awareness.

Cheers guys, lots of handy hints there!

I occasionally do manage to detect a wind bend and use it, but they can be cunningly concealed by the 45 degree shifts every 20 seconds which makes them hard to work out!

I currently don't have a car, so unfortunately the M3 to southampton isn't an option at the moment, attractive as it is!

I guess I'll just learn the reoccuring "features" with time - might try going out an hour early with a laminate card and sail up each shore looking for consistent patterns for a while and see how that goes.

One thing I do have is MUCHO RESPECT for the guys that consistently score bullets down on that little puddle
