Sailed at QMSC this weekend at the Blaze inlands. Fairly nice piece of water bu they stick us over on the Eastern side, things got a bit shifty under the 'wall'
Aside from that they ran the event well, only down side is that the bar closes at 5! Paul |

The other downside of QMSC compared with Grafham and Rutland (and even Datchet) is they have no were for you to stay on site. Maybe explains why the bar closes so early but kind of kills the chance for socials at travellers & open events |

My god how late do you want the bar to stay open surly even baze sailors need a few hours sleep before racing. I was crusing this weekend and struggled arfter going to bed at 4 getting up at 8. I don't think I could race well going to bed at 5. Althought may be I looking at this from a different angle |

I learned on on really bad lake and have the following advice: Avoid sailing into a 'hole' of no wind at all costs! This is vital. Another VERY important point: small lakes mean setting insanly complex courses to make races last long enough. Carefully note the course and figure it out from the shore. The quickest way to lose is to screw up the course (where is mark no 5! lol) - this is so easily done on a strange lake and seen it happen many times. Don't take any big risks, if they don't pay off in lake sailing you are really really screwed. Lakes often have really useful wind bends. Find them and use them. Be prepared for a race to go from F4 - 2 and back again with 90+ wind shifts. Adjust your rig accordingly when the changes happen. Follow the locals |

5pm not 5am.......some people! We did alright on the social front, there was a big group of us staying at the travelodge in Staines so we went out and made out own entertainment in the various pubs and bars. |

Cheers guys, lots of handy hints there! I occasionally do manage to detect a wind bend and use it, but they can be cunningly concealed by the 45 degree shifts every 20 seconds which makes them hard to work out! I currently don't have a car, so unfortunately the M3 to southampton isn't an option at the moment, attractive as it is! I guess I'll just learn the reoccuring "features" with time - might try going out an hour early with a laminate card and sail up each shore looking for consistent patterns for a while and see how that goes. One thing I do have is MUCHO RESPECT for the guys that consistently score bullets down on that little puddle |

I'm ashamed to say that I've done that twice and both times it was when I had a hearty lead :( |

A bunch of us wound up staying in the bunk room at a scout center by Marlow. Random but quite handy (and cheap). Also led to the discovery of possibly the best thing in England......... a pub with its own Chinese takeaway inside!!!! |
