Thanks for the advise. Sounds a good idea to mount the ratchet on the bridle Nick. Will try this out.

Many Thanks

Andrew

Had Harkens for Ratchet blocks on all the boats I've owned. Freddys seem to chew rope and strip the outer cores on thicker diameter ropes (ie mainsheets), and sheets exposed to high loads.

Ronstan (ex freddy) are the best if you want an on off ratchet. but the Harken auto ratchet is by far the best auto ratchet on the market.

i have a freddy block on the feva and it hasnt shredded the mainsheet, the loads may not be that high but its had about 3 or 4 years to do it.

i hav a freddy on the 29er, it came from my old laser when i sold that. It hasnt shredded a rope yet. I think they are great, it grips the rope just the right amount, but not over the top like the Harken i used on an MX Ray once

The Lewmar ratchet block is suprisingly good. It's about half the price compared to the Harken one and doesn't chew ropes at all, but still giving enough hold. The only real drawback is that the ratchet is excessively noisy so you have to make sure it's turned off before pumping the sail near a jury boat .

I've found the switchable 57mm Harken Hexaratchet (think the sheave is the same on the Carbo?) fine on the 3k, Andrew, and actually went to the trouble of using it to replace the Harken autoratchet that came with the 'V' prototype, but that's a matter of personal taste I guess.

I can well imagine Nick A.'s 40mm holding well mounted on the bridle with 180 degree wrap, but wonder how freely you can dump the main in extremis (you got away with it at Draycote, Nick - there were no violent gusts to speak of!)

Doug H., I seem to remember you, amidst glowing praise for the Ronstan/Fredi, admitting that it chewed ropes - something of particular interest to those of us with a penchant for polyprop (Marstron) sheets....

'tis true, I tend to dump myself rather than the mainsheet ....

However, it was pretty gusty on Sunday morning at Draycote and the block seemed to release quite quickly enough when there was enough wind to require it - but I do have a 57mm harken hexaratchet in reserve on my laser 2.

If you want better "holding" then in general the bigger the sheave the better - look at the 75mm Carbo ratchets from Harken (auto or on/off)

not to be rude but the 75 is far to big for a 3k we use them for the kite sheets on the 18!!!  we use a ronstan 60 on the mainsheet.
