I'm sat here refreshing ..
But its thick heavy sleet and snow outside and half the roads in the area are closed. |

I will probably notice as i have a 2 hour study period now! It didn't snow at all over night. Roads in Uppingham look fairly clear but outside Uppingham I have no idea. Its absolutely throwing it down now for abotu the last 50 minutes. BLOODY FREEZING! Yesterday's snow has turned to ice so if they didn't clear it at the club yesterday chances are its just going to be sheet ice! I'm not sure if they can realistically run the event. It will be an absolute helath and safety nightmare no doubt. Its forecast to snow on and off all day today..
Edit: Just seen that the gritters are out so in theory the roads around Rutland should be clear.. Edited by Chris Bridges |

The travel/traffic reports for the area make very ugly reading. I think they will worry more about competitors' safety getting to the event than the actual sailing itself. The organisers would attract a lot of criticism for going ahead if someone took a trailer out then got killed or injured, even if we do so at our own discretion. Controlling a skidding car is one thing, controlling a skidding car/trailer combo is another.
At this rate only a small percentage of the boats entered will make the journey, those who don't go won't get their money back. The most sensible thing would be to postpone then run the full event as it should be, not a snow decimated half hearted thing. |

I agree. Though they should not have said it would go ahead no matter what! Don't think they really thought about people getting there. Actually getting to the club once off the A1 I shouldn't think would be to bad. Off A1 at Wansford, A47 down to the Uppingham roundabout then A6003, then follow the sign posts. The roads that way are all good roads and farely busy routes so i presume will be well gritted.. Wouldn't fancy coming from the Corby direction with a trailer though through Rockingham/Uppingham. Leicester direction should be ok too.. Again A47 to to Uppingham roundabout. Edited by Chris Bridges |

Postponment to next weekend would probably be a good thing, as it looks like its going to be warm!! (comparitively - 9*c!!)
People with travelodges and hotels booked might even be able to move their arival date by 1 week .... if you are lucky. |

If people have all booked into the same place they should combine together to contact the travel lodge - strength in numbers etc, and get the club to endorse their request. Moving the bookings would be good PR all round.

Gritters are one thing, but if it is still slushy and then refreezes tonight, it will still be bad. Not only have they got to think about the conditions themselves, they have to consider the water temperature. After all if it takes you 2 hours to get there when you planned 1 hour, then you'll be rushing around and possible be a hazard to yourself and others. Will await with interest.... |
