Also, think about what you want to get out of the event.  If you sail for a result you're likely to be disappointed.  If, on the other hand, you decide the main aim is to gain experience of sailing in a big fleet you're onto a winner.  My focus this time is going to be to use the event to improve my tacking under pressure and my reaching.  This might be a strange aim, but actually, having 90 + boats around you is always going to force a few tacks isn't it, so in that case it's ideal, as are three races in one day.

If you aren't confident about being in with 'good' guys then remember you always have the option to sail on your own terms - you don't have to start in the very best position if you're not sure about it, just aim to be conservative, maybe focus on timing not position.

All in all, work out what you want, focus on what is achievable and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

(and don't worry about the capsizing - I'll be trying out my tacking sticks for the first-ish time, so my total will be way over yours!)

The actual start I found was not that terrifying, it was the 10minutes beforehand where clearly hardly anyone had a clue what was going on and chaos ensued! also try to avoid having the 18foot skiff come into the gap above you on the line

To be honest Rutland forecasts are rarely right (this is actually the area forecast) any more than 4 days in advance. I reckon it will be about 10 knots so it won't be totally awful. Quite a nice breeze for the 49er.
