Yup - the hull form is Howlett derived and it is defiantly 'dinghy' coming from I14 shapes a decade or so back.  (Dinghies did not stop when 'skiffs' came along thank you !)  This means it is quick enough but it is also hightly suited to a wide range of conditons and locations as has been said.  Where it does do particularly well is in medium and higher strength breezes and it will frequently embarass 'faster' shapes in planing conditions both up and down hill.

Another 'traditonal' feature is a centreboard rather than dagger.  A slight speed penalty possibly but again very user friendly.  Still these sort of features have hardly stiffled the growth of the class or for that matter the popularity of larger classes such as the Solo and Phantom et al ....  All these classes are a bit like marmite - love them or hate them  !   But an awful lot of people do go for them.

GRF - understand your point and if it were a board rig you would be more right for sure.  The advantage is that you can 'feather' the leading edge of the sail when over-powered and keep trucking - 'hard' battening on (single sail) singlehanders means that sheeting out when overpowered can just lead to additional drag as the camber is more forcibly locked in and cannot collapse, the boat slows even more, is more over-powered etc.  This HALO rig is also far from conventional as the stick is an elliptical 100x42mm wing section that 'over-rotates' - does the same job as camber inducers without 'hard' battening.   Highly efficient and the sail design is in keeping with its characteristics.

Having seen the video of it sailing in nextto no wind, that rig seems very fast to me!  For what its worth, my boat has the same mast and this is what my main looks like:

Thanks, I've been on the phone all morning trying to persuade Mike the
Alto man to talk to Mr (Blaze) Lyon about mutually co-operating to let me
buy a blaze with an alto poled spinny, I think that would scratch my
single handed club racer itch.

Should be able to cope with lazers running by the lee in a blow and
sounds like it's got a sea rocker, so all they need to do is let me buy the
bits from each other.. you never know.

Then having sat back thinking that'll do it.

I find my sail no on a reasonably priced MPS.. doh

GRF

Always happy to talk to prosepctive buyers !!.... Perhaps you had better try out a 'standard' one first though.  There are several ways to go faster downwind and not all of them involve an extra sail .....    Happy to pass on some of the feedback from our own trials.  We have no particular bar on 'specials' nor could we enforce a 'ban' as sold hulls are owned by others.

However any non-supplied modifications and their impact upon the basic structure would become the sole responsibility of the owner as we would not have control.   We would also strongly recommend that you do talk with the CA as well - Peter Barlow their technical guy has experimented with several spinnaker set-ups in recent years.

FYI a STANDARD Mk3 epoxy Blaze will be displayed at the boat show on 17/18th as part of the Dinghy Showcase.  Could talk then.

Blalto or Altaze?

I might pop up to the boat show and check one out, all very well blathering
on speculatively on forums, but there may not be enough room to put the
pole swivel and the bridge.

Then we just have to discuss the optional trapeze (for us light people)and I'll
have what I wanted all along a sensible MPS thingy with retractable CB and
hopefully a kick up Rudder to charge the beach with.

They have quite a wide bow on the blaze and my brothers MK1 had a nice concave fordeck, which would suit i think a spinny shute and mouth nicely.  Depending on what happens in court in two weeks, my wife is desperate for a new baby and if it happens i would move back into single handers, i was thinking about another 300, but a kite kit would be awesome.

How about a much bigger 800 hull, with an insanely overpowered rig and 5 trapeze wires (6 crew, the helm won't trapeze). Upon hoisting the asymmetric, a long spar will slide to the top of the mast and the spinnaker will be flown from that (this allows for greater sail size). A bowsprit long enough to warrant supporting shrouds will also be used. There will be no jib, but in it's place a Genoa (obviously some kind of purchase system will have to be implemented). A square top mainsail (sheeted off the boom) would be nice. The puny little wings that resemble drain pipes will be scrapped and replaced by 49er style, solid wings (I suggest 1.5m width). The sails will have images of attractive women (preferably blonde) with excessively large breasts on them. An indestructible kick up rudder (material yet to be selected) will feature, as will a pivoting centerboard made of the same material. The mast will hold at internal camera which activates when it's built in sensors detect extreme motion or a sudden and significant drop in speed, and a satellite link to the sailing club so embarrassing moments can not be sneakily erased. Now all the pitchpoles, capsizes, crashes and other carnage filled moments can be recorded for the amusement of those in the bar after racing. A fridge should be built into the hull with a locking, watertight trapdoor in the deck which will store the beer (dad, if you're reading this that was not my own suggestion...)

Good plan?

That's a good idea, I'll add it.
