According to Google he is/was participating in I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and making a complete t**t of himself as he deliberately winds the other competitors up as part of some game plan.
Struggling to see the analogy myself ![]() |

It is indeed a pity they have to resort to such bitter childish personal
attacks everytime, and it wont be long before they go running to teacher again. They just don't get this 'banter' thing, probably never been to a proper regatta, had a few beers in the bar, taken the piss out of fellow competitors in a light hearted vein. You can tell those that have, Wing Wang, Rick, Doug H and probably even Bert.. Where I was going with this in its' bantery wind up, was to hopefully prompt a retort from someone who can sail a laser, to put me in my place with a bit of what I'd have to put up with.. Like this guy on SA, classic post about what I could expect ..
The Deathroll - a guide Step 1 - Realizing you're completely f**ked... The exact point at which you need to realize you're completely f**ked will vary and comes later and later with experience. For some, its the first moment the boat starts to wobble going downwind, for others its when the last twitch of the tiller was too much or the yank on the mainsheet wasn't enough. Either way, knowing your moment be it early or late is paramount to both executing and recovering from the death roll. Step 2 - Execution of the perfect death roll... The execution of the perfect death roll entails several key points; style, recovery planning and timing/placement. The easiest yet often overlooked element of the death roll is timing. The most opportune moments to perform this maneuver are directly to leeward of the windward mark and directly to windward of the leeward mark. Performing a death roll at the opportune time near those two points is certain to make you the hero of the day. It also serves to encourage others to join in the fun of a death roll, a result you may see if you get your timing right. Style and recovery planning are linked in a way, they will often increase and decrease in direct relation to each other. They're also both linked directly to knowing the moment at which you're completely f**ked as you must know that moment to execute any style or recovery planning. - The most basic method of death roll is to be caught completely by surprise and ride it all the way down without a word, the look on your face will out you as an amateur. - A slightly more complicated technique is to let out a battle cry as you reach your moment and proceed to ride it down (points are deducted if you scream like a little girl). - Next would be the spider monkey over the side combined with a swan dive. This method shows the beginning of recovery planning as you'll now be on the correct side of your newly capsized vessel. - Even more complicated is the spider monkey front-flip handspring. As you desperately clamor up to the new high side of your doomed vessel you then lunge at the daggerboard hands first just as the mast hits the water. This method can be risky as when slightly misjudged will result in a daggerboard-faceplant or slug slide down the side. - The pinnacle of deathrolling is the railslide. This is performed beginning with a spidermonkey over the side, pausing and balancing ones self on the rail and riding it down to the bow as the mast hits the water. Extra points are added for a rebel yell on the way to the bow. Step 3 - Recovery So your moment has come and past and now you've got to sort all the crap out and get going again. If time isn't of essence, hoist your sorry ass up onto the daggerboard, reach in and grab the mainsheet and tiller, flip the main down and bob the mast till its no longer pointing into the wind. If your recent cockup is about to cost you the race, grab onto the board and pop the mast into the air holding on as it takes you for a ride. Now take a moment and enjoy all the applause you're getting if you did it with style and perfect timing. And yes, your water bottle is now floating away...
Get some imagination will you, fight fire with fire and ffs dont take it seriously, try and spot the absurd from the serious... Edited by G.R.F. |

In Grumpfs defense he is no longer offensive; he's just winding us all up. The best form of defense in these situations is attack ... I am assured he has skin thick enough so fill yer boots ...

That death roll description was just so horribly familiar......
![]() I don't find grumpf offensive. I just know that he is a little misunderstood (the onset of senility does such things to the brain) and yet probably deserves the abuse he gets. I try not to abuse him though, as I feel sorry for him and therefore attempt to teach him the error of his ways. He loves it. |

So enough of the sympathy, I find that worse than the FrancoCatSymm
offensive, explain to me why a death roll occurs, what is it. Is it because the centreboard wont come all the way up for fear of interacting with the boom in a gybe, I assume you do pull the CB up when its very windy, how far do you pull it, do you take it all the way out? What happens? |

Apparently mine were happening (dead downwind, obviously) because I had the lethal combination of too much board up, causing the boat to rock, combined with not enough kicker on, making the rig unstable. So I now know not to pull the board up too much, unless it's light - medium stuff, and to put more kicker on than I would expect to. Clearly these are lessons taught by the contnder, other boats may well differ.
In Kingston it was very light and I went fast dead downwind in the very light but having next to no board down - you don't need it, and sailing by the lee, which was scary at first but I actually grew to love it. I have yet to understand it, but hey, who cares if it works? My centreboard gets nowhere near the boom, btw. |

I suspect a group luv'in would get old Grumpfs going more than any leg pulling we could deliver ....
The death roll is most common to boats with no shrouds, i.e. Lasers and Toppers. It is usually caused by letting the main too far out, slack kicker and little daggerboard. The twist in the very eased sail, perhaps more than 90 degrees pushs the mast to windward, people then try and correct this by steering, usually the wrong way and moving their weight. This can then result in a posative feedback system that ossciilates wildly out of control. Unfortunatly Lasers seem to go fastest on a run in a breeze when on the verg of instability. Personally I quite enjoy sailing Lasers like this and deliberatly set the boat up to start rolling ... it's quite good fun. The Rooster Laser DVD's have and excellent section on this whole business and I recommend them. The rule is if you get a big windward roll BEARAWAY ... don't try and luff as this makes things worse. The boat goes a long way before the boom flips and if it does flip well you can just gybe back ... Edited by Guest#260 |
