I will however say on the windsurfing side (though this may not apply to this
exact convo), last year i recall speaking to an osprey sailor who's daughter is a windsurfing lass and he takes her along to various coaching weekends. He himself said he'd learnt huge amount about race tactics and winshifts through listening to the coaches teaching these young windsurfers. |

Now now people, lets not dive straight back into competition talk. I think

Well the correct answer is that it would depend on the weather..
Then it would fall down to the other participants He would obviously win the Laser bit, and I'd probably do the same in the windsurfer bit, so it would come down to the best results against the rest of the fleet. And any tactical stuff going on of course, if it was on a Lake then he might get screwed by the odd shift.. Nothings certain in sailing.. But it would be a fun contest.. And further illustrate my point. It's exactly the same thing sitting down or standing up... |

By a country mile ... he's a very capable windsurfer as are many of the top Olympic dinghy sailors ... |

Well, if he can't windsurf already you'd have to bring up to your level of expertise in a dinghy, otherwise it wouldn't be a fair fight. I'm trying to say his standard of windsurfing would have to be the same as your standard of dinghy sailing.
Unfortunately we can't do anything about his age and fitness advantage, but surely that will be more than compensated for by your wisdom and experience, so.... .....my money would be on Goodison! |

grumpf.. as much as i would love the windsurfing to win in your make-believ competition but ive held a race like this... and needless to say the sailboat won and convivncingly until the wind picked up for me to plane consistently... its a matter of what you want to do because... if your a sailor then sailing is your favourite but if your a windsrufer then windsurfing is the best for you.. g=] |

And your point is? That a road bike's faster than a BMX? I agree that the sailing (both dinghy and windsurfing) have everything to gain in looking at materials and technologies used elsewhere, but I can't see what you style of competition would achieve. Call me stupid again, but a sailboard seems to me quite different from a sailing dinghy. There's a sail alright, but both road bikes and BMXs have 2 wheels. Doesn't make them comparable. |

Well I've done 29.5 knots on one myself and Stacey (guy who works with
me) did 31.5 kts the same day, so I can't see any reason to disbelieve the French who claim 34 kts, it's not actually that fast in windsurf circles and the guy who claimed it is six foot six and weighs 100 kgs.. I reckon that traditional long boards could probably go faster, something like the old Mistral One Design, once the track is pulled right back and you're in the back strap there aint much board in the water. The thing the Kona has is a stepped hull, so its wetted surface is much less than its waterline length once it's up on the plane, but it doesn't have a mast track, the hull step thing sort of does that for it. It's 360 long but the underhull is more like 310, it's not that competitive against full blown race boards it wont quite live with a laser upwind but will take it apart off wind in a blow, in sub planing I'd put it around 1080 handicap wise. They are great fun to race against each other, being easy to sail and uncomplicated, I've got a picture somewhere, I'll maybe look it out later and edit it in, taken in Ireland at an event we ran out there. Here's an idea. We run a fleet of them for demos, how about this as a decider. We get a Fleet of Lasers and a Fleet of Konas then we hold an event where you have to race 3 events on a board and 3 events on a Laser, you lot can have your man whathisname the Olympic guy and I'll take him on, who do you think would win? |
