I've been thinking about this and wondering why it never evolved in
dinghy circles. The sort of thing that could have brought it on would have been an organization like that TASA outfit that was about a while back but didn't seem to gain any traction. If it defined a set of rules, then folk could build toward them, but unless there were a significant 'trend' moment, with the promise of sun filled uplands of greater sales tomorrow, it's unlikely anyone is going to take the risk. So, the question has to be, what would prompt folk to buy boats to go compete on such a circuit in the first place? Cash Prizes? Would a series event need to cater for all single handers, I've read of RS700vMPS face offs before for example, has there ever been a dual of single handed hikers? Maybe stuff like this already exists and I've never heard of it. Edited by G.R.F. |

Depends on who was sailing which boat so subjective. I can honestly say though upwind in a blow the Blaze flies (because you can get your weight well outboard on the racks). Same on a tight reach, I used to fly past the guys in their Phantoms struggling to keep them flat whilst I was still really pushing. With regards to hull weight as Blaze720 has already pointed out the 72kg is inclusive of the racks and the board (which will definitely add some). Remember a Phantom is a similar size boat and weighs in at something like 65kg bare hull. |

Another vote for the planet Turtle performance concept. And better looking than an RS300 - that weird sheerline is definitely an acquired taste - but still something like a modern N12 hull, the new Jo Richards design might be food for thought http://www.cowes.co.uk/zonexml/story?story_id=5509;cp=0

The Vareo may have issues in club races on tight reaches, I don't know.
But I am convinced that it is a very good boat to teach yourself sailing asymmetrics without having to fight a trapeze ![]() Even more so if your background is that you wanted to "retire" from a windsurfer to a MPS... ![]() Maybe a MPS with trampolines and smaller sails would be not too far of if you want a "Vareo Turbo"? A decent lightweight hull built in Europe and carbon spars will get you in a similar price range anyway. For a price matching the current economic situation a box rule forcing alumnium spars/racks and GRP hull like F18 would probably a better path. Anyway, the Vareo maybe more of a "compromise" than RS300 or MPS performance wise but it's still a very good "compromise" and a very good and fun boat so "heads up" to Nick ![]() |

The whole concept of the Box rule is pretty much what the Merlin Rocket and National 12 are. Enough rules to slow development and stop boats becoming outdated too fast, but freedom to put a boat together to suit weight, sailing water and sailing style, so negating the need for "weight equalization". It is a shame that the post war dinghy boom didn't spawn a singlehanded version of these boats. Mind you, if it had followed the Merlin route, it might be a tad expensive!

The international canoes weigh pretty much nothing so I fail to see how a wider bulkier boat that would be put under extreme pressures could be built down to weight for 10K

Be interesting to know how much of the cost of the IC/AC comes from the sliding seat and carriage plus the rigging around it. Wings could be much; a) cheaper to add - bolt the tubes to the hull, slide in the wings ala the blaze b) give you similar leverage as the sliding seat c) let you get your weight further back d) provide some 'wipeout stability' (i.e. give you time to recover from a capsize causing gust or lull while being slow because you've got a wing in the water) perhaps a slight wider hull form than the IC with deeper <knock-up> rudder, <gybing> centreboard, similar rig and more rocker, with wings (that can be set to different widths for equalisation and boat park storage efficiency)? |

Personally its not how fast a boat is that matters to me as much as how fast it feels. Granted it needs to be fast enough, a py of around a 1000 would be fine as long as it feels that its even faster. Plenty oif feedback, bit of spray, jumping off of waves that kinda thing. Ian |

I've often wondered how that slidey canoe contraption works, what do you
do when you tack, kick your feet up slide into the boat on it spinning as you go and kick back out the other side, or is it more of a soft shoe shuffle? |
