I think it would be interesting to see, but my money's on the fireball all round the course. Fireball's are deceptively quick in a breeze.

Just for the record guys the PN figures for the Vago are as follows:

Pussy Rig (Standard) Single Handed      1100       Double Handed 1070

Full Fat (XD)         &n bsp;    Single Handed      1030  &n bsp;    Double Handed 1000

Where Medway mainac got 960 from I don't know!!!

Whats the PN for the Fireball?

eh how come its supposedly quicker with the same rig but with 2 people in? I know it'll ease handling in strong winds but surely in light winds it's gonna go quicker with one on board.
I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

He was quoting 960 as the provisional PY for the RS500, which is less than a Cherub sails off at the moment (975)!

I'm guessing one of those is a little bit optimistic & one might be a little bit pessimistic....

The PNs are different, because as follows:

As wind speed increases you have to furl the jib because otherwise you run out of hands! Going downwind raising and droping the kite takes longer, i.e. the crew can start to raise the kite whilst rounding the windward mark, not possible when single handed. Also in the kinds of wind that we had at the weekend you don't have enough weight to keep the boat flat on the beat.

Lucy L was right, I was quoting 960 for the 500. But this was what you told us last year Sumo (on the Vago/Omega/Vision etc thread):

"Laser are talking of 980 for the XD, i.e. bigger mylar main and gennie. "

So there's been some well-justified back-tracking since then. Still think you're pushing it at 1000 - take a look at the individual race results in Fed Week.

The Fireball PY has slowly dropped to 982, I believe, but it can afford to drop some more (my guess when I had mine was that 960 would OK with a Winder, provided there were no 'bandits' about)

So in short in light airs the Vago singlehanded is going to be a total bandit!!

But not too light as it sticks in displacement mode, very short waterline length, needs to be planning.

I sailed one over the weekend and was surprised & impressed by the performance.  These are really good value fun boats, I don't think you could buy anything (brand new) faster for the same money.

You guys did well coming in third behind Jo Richards at the weekend in Weymouth. It is nice to have some support for the Vago on this forum from some one other than myself, Viva las Vago!

Sumo, I will come out in support of the Vago as well.  It has taken a year for me to decide I like after all which is really down to learning to sail it properly. Sailed well it really is fast as long as its on the plane and it will give a fireball some trouble. But if you can't sail it well it'll be painfully slow. Having said that, Laser did overstate its performace in the early days.

On the mast front there's plenty of flex - just look at one to see.  It might not accelerate like a 29er but that's a weight & sail area issue rather than a need for a carbon mast. Would be interesting to compare with the pre-production hull which was GRP - used at the Jan 2005 boatshow.  Wonder what Laser did with that?

Yes its plastic - thats why its affordable & it is a good design compromise. You just have to get over the plastic v GRP prejudice.
