This is an absolute no-brainer.

Get a 12ft skiff.

All the weight tolerance and rig choices of the 18 but in a package for 2 crew rather than 3.  No need for the RIB to go sailing with either.

One step forwards, 2 steps back...

Very very well is the answer there.  Absolutely no problem, but you have to be a bit butch to pull them up the slip.

Unfortunately demand somewhat outstrips supply...
Keep an eye on the class forum second hand section...
It also depends how recent a boat you are set on, older boats can oft be found on eBay and demand isn't quite as high as for a more recent one.
