Yes we've been on to them for years about settling on a class to race, but just as soon as it looks like its going to happen one of them ups and gets something else, we've got lsr3000's x3 and a few Supernovas, but its a small coastal club, not many of us, we get about a dozen boats out on a thursday night and maybe twice that at the weekend. It used to be a scorpion club in the day, but now there are so many different boat types, and as you may have noticed on the what boat thread, nothing ideally suitable to our water. So, the handicap is a way of life. I'd be interested in finding out more, how to calculate it, how to submit what? Results, times? Its not obvious on the Ar why eh? site. Yes. It's only handicap racing. Go class racing if you want the real thing. You could try finding out if your club makes its annual PY returns to the RYA, which relatively few can be bothered to do. And if your club doesn't do it, you could volunteer to take on the job.

Portsmouth yardsticks are based on the performance of the boat and crew in races. Each year (some) clubs make "returns" to the RYA showing how each boat did. The RYA then plugs this into a "Black box" of some description and new/revised handicaps result.
As you can work out. The boat and the crew are handicapped as the new numbers are based on results, so if you have a boat that is not sailed much and is sailed very badly, then the handicap will slowly drop (get slower) and so will become un-realistic if "fast" people start racing the boat. PY also does not deal well with development classes as it is always lagging behind the developments. |

So, is there a list anywhere, where you collectively discuss obvious
inaccuracy. How often does this yardstick thing get sorted. Who decides it, and how do they come to that decision? There's a clear cock up with this Laser 3000 v the RS200 for example had it graphically demonstrated on thursday even allowing for competance v incompetance, the one boat sits so much higher in the water (More volume on the 200)so annihilates the 3000 once the winds gone, yet it has a higher/slower rating, how did that happen? Are there variations say for a boat like the 3000 that can be crewed or single handed. Do clubs mess around and use their own versions. Are they (obviously) biassed toward windy conditions? If so, then its a bit of an anathema, since its only light weather when the hull performance rather than sailor skill counts surely? Or am I missing something and just dont get it?
