OOPS - alright i was wrong twice here...
it was six out of six ( i just lost count ) and ben and daryl got two firsts ( i thought sweet dreams won the first race... but apparently not. - our 6th place in this race was 1 minute behind the leader, after starting 5 minutes late) so it's not quite such complete domination after all. Cherub building is not much of a business - i've only done 2 part-complete boats in 7 years. |

Agree it's hard to define 'hardest to win', but maybe if you could for a moment imagine a child of immense talent say offspring of Ben and Shirley (sorry to any partners) - we can asume a degree of natural talent will be inherited. So also assuming that resources are unlimited, what class will that child find the hardest to win of the many choices he/she has (dinghy, sportsboat, cat singlehander, doublehander or whatever). I'd guess it's either Optimist or Laser.

Hardest Class to sail - no question MPS. Just sailing those things is one thing, thinking about where to go with them up a beat or downwind is something else altogether. And as for the winner of the Cherubs ![]() How easy must that be? What do you have to do? Be silly enough to sail a boat called Cherub ![]() |

Those who know me here will recognise the bias....... The hardest without a doubt, is the Scorpion nationals. All the top boats are the same weight, have the same gear and very similar speeds. They all carry the same bulbous spinny shapes so reaching/running angles are the same and they all rake rigs back alot upwind giving them the same upwind tacking angles. The only advantages come from playing the shifts/the fleet and boat handleing. On top of all that 2/3 rds of the fleet have been in the class for more than 15 years and the national fleets are always 50+ boats, unsplit, diving for the same marks. Nobody has ever won by ''7 straight wins' like the more feeble boat/gear orientated development classes. I can't remember when the scorp nationals wasn't decided on the last day. Without a doubt the most difficult national to win. I encourage you all to come and have a go. |

Using the same argument, Lasers also are the same weight, have the same gear, and similar speeds. You can't tune the rig at all, and they all have the same tacking angles. The only advantages come from playing the shifts and boat handling, but the boat handling on a single sailed boat is easier than a two-mans, three-sail boat, so there is even less margin there for an advantage. A lot of Laser sailors have been in the fleet for many years too, and there's a lot more than 50 boats in the fleet. I don't think anyone has ever won every race. Nothing against Scorps, I quite like them, but I'm still saying Lasers are the hardest to win |

Very fair point. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who thinks the Laser nationals are easy. It is made even harder baecause laser sailing style is a little different from other dinghies. I know some laser sailors go on to do well in other boats, but I still recon the laser would be the hardest class to 'hop into', without having sailed one previously, and do well - even at club level. The thread question would be better put as 'which is the easiest to win at national level?' Just an after thought, but I also recon the GP 14's are pretty tough stuff. |

The second best RS400 sailor at our club hopped into the Laser fleet last winter and won the series. Particularly suprising because on paper, judging by open wins, you'd have said that the Laser fleet was stronger than the 400s. Even without that evidence I'd still say that things like the Moth and IC present a rather bigger "hop into" challenge... Edited by JimC |
