L3000 ok but seems a bit slow in lighter conditions and cramped. Vago ideal on paper - robust and progressive rig but reviews vary from crap to fantastic. Buzz/RS500 possibly?

Ask your son what he wants ... because if you get it wrong he won't want to sail it ...

Not having sailed a 3k, but having sailed on a number of five oh's, I think the latter is a fantastic boat - rocket ship.  Yes there may be faster classes out there, but in the 505 we have a boat design that is 50+ years old and still stirring the blood of those who sail it.

Say that about the 3k - runs for cover

BTW, Purple and Yellow -  now there is a go faster combination

When you find a big kettle of crazy it's probably best not to stir it - Pointy Haired Boss

Crew on 505 8780

Er yes, no question, its a bigger volume boat has a bigger plate and more
sail area. Wether it will hold a candle to a 5 0 5 remains to be seen, unlikely,
but then i dont want anything that big.

Nothing wrong with 3k's we have a mini class of three of them now, just not
brilliant with heavy crew in light weather, great fun to single hand though.

Purple is the only colour to have, way faster than the yellow ones.

And, er, you think that will change when you get a 500?

But you have a purple 3k! I feel that between those, the yellow and the mint ones, Laser managed to convince the buying public they weren't serious about the 3k, or at least that the 3k wasn't a serious boat. [no offence to those with said colours - you know that appearances are in this case deceptive  ]

Hmm, that's fighting talk, maybe I'll bring my beat up chewed
daggerboarded purple peril up there and thrash your shiney new bit of
kit.

Just for the hell of it.

That water looks smooth as a billiard table.

That is if I can remember how to take down the big sticking up pole thing
the sails are attached to.

Nice looking boat, I like mine a lot, but I just can't stand being beaten by
folk having to do no work at all, sitting in their 470 or 505 and coming
past with that self satisfied smug look. Especially after I've nailed them at
the start out tactic'd them on the first beat and they rocket by.

Please let us know how you get on with it. So far the forum is thin on people who've actually sailed a 500.

Come to Wilsonian SC on the Medway and receive a good thrashing from our V3000's, then try one out and regret your choice . We got our first on Saturday; wheeling it around the boat park it felt (and may have been) as light as a Laser 1, but stiffer...

Well, now I've involved half my club here and half the rest of the
windsurfing world, its fitting I've come to a decision.

Had to drop one of the daughters of darkness at Southampton Airport
this morning, and flushed with my recent race successes (Getting round
without upending too often in a force 6-7 and hanging on to our Tim
who's a handy Supernova jockey). I called in to LDC and had one more
look at that RS500, its definitely what I'm looking for, its a bit bigger and
will accomodate my bigger chum, its got the retracting foil which is a
tasty shaped high aspect blade, simple one line spinaker hoist I'm used
to, not that pump thing they have on the RS700, the hull has a relatively
fast looking rocker, it doesn't look as short and squat as the 400 & 200,
its got a decent bit of freeboard, sails are a white scrim mylar that I can
sticker up a treat, the rudder has got the cleat on sideways so the rope
shouldn't fall out while I'm going along.
Its got a rotating thingy for the kicker next to the main cleat tower, in fact
I got so excited I had to slash the plastic while I was there so I'm now on
the waiting list.

Now I just need to figure a way of launch and recovery wihout totally
trashing the bottom and explaining to the bread knife how I won it in a
cross dressing competition.

Not cramped any more if you adopt the new aft bridle/off the boom sheeting option, and possibly a Gnav (that's just if you're kind to crews). See the link I posted higher up this thread.
