For vang read kicking strap. The rudder on a 3k shouldn't come up. Do you have the downhaul rigged 2:1 (as the standard boat)? Sheet loads will be considerably lighter if you adopt the arrangement shown in the link I posted earlier, or add another block to the centre bridle and finish the sheet at the boom, i.e. make the purchase 5:1 instead of the standard 4:1. I used that before switching to an aft bridle. If you had weather helm with no main drawing, the boat must have been heeled. A 3k needs to be sailed flat, esp. on the reach. All that said, it was an unusually strong wind - exactly when a 3k scores. |

correct me if I'm wrong but you didn't have loads of vang on in a blow?

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. |

Hmm, used a boom vang years ago on old cyt sails to tighten the leech, cant quite make the connection to what bit would do that on this 3000?
True of 99% of shortboard windsurfers, the ones you see wearing neoprene boots, but I'm one of the dying breed of windsurfing hard men. The Racing Longboarder, we eventually will master this sitting down lark, but there's not a yottie alive could take us on and win a round robin which included a race on windsurfers. Not even if you dig up Geoff Carveth, somehow bring him back to life, dust him off, get some charisma fitted and let him loose on us. He'd still be toast for us to burn - again. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Graemef |

Are you vanging hard enough? If you're not carrying enough vang, you'll be using a lot of force to pull the boom down and take the twist out, which the vang should be doing.
Of course, the basic problem is that ALL windsurfers are effete wimps who can't handle a real boat. ![]() |

if its a similar set up to a laser et al, I would get a mega bolt for the pivot or a little hand tightenable nut and put it on so hard that it hurts your fingres trying to do it!! As for the playing the main hurting your hand/arm, try the gym and doing it more often it's just one of those things were it's really sport specific fitness.

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

I'd put a new cleat on your rudder assembly if its popping up. May be worth putting more cunningham on as well as it helps move the centre of effort forwards which will reduce weatherhelm. |

The main is probably backing because the jib is over-sheeted, when its windy and the luff starts to back a bit we generally take that as an indication to dump the jib slightly. Can't remember exactly to what extent we did it on the Laser 2 but both on the Laser 5000 and 49er when its windy we have the jib sheeted so its never really inside the lines of the gunwhales of the boat, hard to explain but just try sheeting the main in and having the jib sheeted in to the extent where its not backing the main (something to expeiment with really). Footing off when its windy is a good idea on the 3000, especially in waves because it gives the boat more power and drive and lessens the affects of the waves on slowing the boat. Try and aim to get the boat plaining upwind all the time in those conditions too.

Yep it did that, the damn rudder thing kept sweeping back, even put a half
hitch to secure it beyond the cleat, one time whilst swimming, I even twisted the lock screw thing to try and keep it locked down, bu the sheer speed kept knocking it up. Damn boat really shifts. Couple of beats we even manged to appear to be planing upwind, normally we just stuff it, but with all that wind and the sail backing we thought try and foot it off a bit. Edited by Graemef |

Weather helm = boat isn't flat. If the boat is flat and you're still getting weather helm, check your rudder is right down.

Well last night it was a whole different ball game.
Sandettie was recording 35, and it must have been 25-30knots in the gusts inshore, not that it looked like that when we set out. Windiest sailboatrace I've ever been out in, and that Lazer 3000 really hums, being offshore, the water was relatively flat. We, are not the most experienced of sit down sailors, we're both pretty handy standing up, but this was a whole new bag of spanners. I've got so many questions, why does the bloody sail back all the time, why is it even with the main fully sheeted out, and the jib fully powered, I'm still getting weather helm. How the hell do you hold that power down with your left hand, when you can barely hold it with your right, surely you dont cleat it off? We got round, even managed to finish 5th over the water, had an absolute blast, it was really fun (Once it was over), but bloody hell that boat is twitchy when its got an armful of wind up its bum. We upended it three times, the start was a hoot, having capsized at 30 secs to go, we manged to right it, fell in the boat looked at the watch 1 sec to go and we're bang on the line, sheet in and boff, we're in the lead tearing down the reach, with absolutely no idea what to do next. ![]() Even managed to hold onto 3rd for a couple of laps until we piled in big time - whatever great night we're hooked, will stick with this 3000 for a bit, until rider error is removed from the equation. What a blast, can't do much today. Edited by Graemef |
