This evening I sold a Javelin on ebay. Not a bad old boat usable sails, a couple of kites, a seviceable cover
and a combi. How much did it go for? £428. I am not complaining as I think we made a profit after a couple of good seasons but...last year I sold a Zoom on ebay. What the hell is a zoom I hear you say? Well its one of those laser clones that never made it. The Zoom went for £480, a very good profit since it only cost £15.00. The point I wish to make is, have you noticed that total crap with gafs and clinker and unknown classes or origins go for good money whereas "propper old racers are hard to sell. Please discuss.

ebay is a very variable place for buying things.

Bought a CD a while back for 15 quid, sold it for 25 2 weeks later as I did not like it.  It's a fair bit of luck as to sho spots the sale and so bids (or not)

The thing that always make me laff if that crap boats usually have no reserve and a low starting price so people are tempted to bid but mainstream racing dinghies usually have a high starting point and a reserve so nobody bids.

Saw a Laser II with a starting point of £2,600 the other day . That's not an auction it's a classified!

E-bay's a good place to sell a Topper that way.
However, there's been one on "Buy in now" recently: the guy was asking for £750, which was a bit steep. All offers, substantially lower, have been declined and the same boat with same pics has reappeared in a private auction, with bidders' identities undisclosed... A lot of secrecy for a mere Topper

If you are selling a laser with a sail number past the 120,000 mark then ebay is superb, they seem to go for ridiculous money, especially if the fancy XD bits have been added to the boat. I was thinking of just buying them cheap from the ad's in the back of Y&Y and class association and then just relisting on ebay. Unfortunately i'm lazy and never got round to it though.

I would never buy a boat without looking at it first. Do people bid without taking a look?

People do bid without seeing and somtimes without expert knowledge. I sold a Lark on ebay 3 years ago for £300. It was no 21 by the way. When we delivered it to two very nice chaps living together who obviously had no experience. It did prick my concience a bit but I made sure that they had lifejackets ect. so we buggered off. The following year old No.21 "Purple Myrtle" turned up at the Southport 24 having been purchased on ebay the day before. The sail was wrapped arround the mast and it was obvious that owning it had not been a happy experience! It blew old boots that year and these cool guys who had purchased it sailed it to destruction. The next day, monday its remains were back on Ebay, bet they did'nt make a profit.

I remember trying not to grin like an idiot when I had to return my Dad's brand spanking new Ent to the shore with a load of broken wood where the kicker used to be mounted to the mast post. It was rather windy (1997).

Perhaps we should start a regatta open only to boats aquired on ebay within the last 2 months for less than £500?
