For fleet racing & for where you sail - topper

However if he`s at the top weight for a topper then he will need to sell the boat in a years time anyway,So I would say that the laser is properbly the better buy because he & the boat can "grow" together.

Phantom 1181
AC-227 IC 304
blaze / halo 586

Great shame there is not a strong Laser fleet in West Wales.

I guess you get a catch 22 situation where there is not a strong Laser fleet so people do not sail Lasers, so there is not a strong Laser fleet,

A lanky 55Kg is already big enough to sail a Radial. If he is struggling in the 4.7 it is technique not weight that is the problem.

I would strongly suggest he gets in a Laser ASAP as he should be in the Radial in the next 6 months!!!

A perfect size for the topper and if it's big fleet racing he wants, the topper
circuit gets FAR FAR larger numbers at their big events and has a tightly
packed circuit and plenty of training on offer all over.

Not only that, but 13 is a good age for a Topper - if he does any events it'll be full of similar age kids.

The Topper and the Laser 4.7 are both Junior classes and therefore sailed by the same age kids!

Sorry, was thinking the choice was between a Topper and a Radial.

I am thinking he is still slightly shall small for a Radial but he can easily sail the 4.7 for a bit then sell his 4.7 rig (I am always getting asked if people know of second hand rigs available) and buy a Radial... that is the beauty of the Laser formula (and in a few years time he buy a standard).

By the way I ran RYA Topper squads for several years and really enjoyed it but when choosing a boat getting the correct one for your body weight is very important. If he bought a Topper he could end up sailing a different boat every year for the next four years (Topper, 4.7, Radial, Standard)! or having to make a big jump from Topper to Radial.
