Have just got back into 12s myself, not the modern designs, the older single floored variety. for puddle and river sailing, they are absolutely ideal. at our club we are finding the teenagers loving them as well. we are about to take 3 boats down to the inlands. (combined age of boats, 100, combined age of sailers, 105. and I am 35!) you get a lot of boat for your money for the older designs. the most I have spent on mine (I have 2 and about to have a half share in a 3rd) is £250.00. admittedly there is going to be a lot of varnishing involved over the winter....

Over 19 used to include Tom and Liz, who have won it more times than most recently (I think he's lost weight recently). Other than that, Richard Williams has been runner up a few times and he qualifies for the Tubs...
I reckon the competitive range is more like 18-21. Graham and Zoe are exceptions who get by in a blow on amazing boat handling which when you have a short tippy boat counts for a lot. The 12's circuit tends to skew the weight band also as there are not many events on open water that would give the heavier end a shot. |

They did indeed and they did very well. But that is just one race. You tell me the last time the nationals was won by a crew over 19 stone... |

I think the big problem for the N12 is the current lack of decent second
hand boats on the market. I have been looking for about a year now, but all reasonably priced double bottom boats are gone almost as soon as you see them for sale. The situation is worse than the Merlin Market. The difference being that with 3-4 competative designs, and recent development, making the decision for a new boat from outside the class is a hard one. Everyone who sails them even those who sail a little heavy tend to rave about the class, and having been there 15 years ago, I want to return with my family after a number of years in higher performance craft, due to the friendly nature of the class stalwarts. If I can find a boat to buy in the next six months I will be there too, otherwise might have to go to the 200, and its predictable sailing. AndyMck |

we acquired one out of the boat park at BLYM, boat for beer, and is currently
being reconstructed in the back garden, but although having only sailed it once so cant really say anything about that (yet) the people we have had contact with in the class have been really friendly, and have offered much advice and help where required! |

We had a 12 for a year; very nice boat but we were uncompetitive at almost 22 stone. If you want to win I think you need to be 17 - 18. That said heavier crews can have their day. I think the boat has got to a bit of a funny place with regards the rules and the rig is looking a bit sad/dated. I think the class need to make some changes if they want to be here in another 60 years, it used to be one of THE classes but now it is just a shadow of that ... |

Maybe keep an eye on the second hand list rather diving straight in for a spanky new one.
I won't have a bad word said about National 12s. Even though I was always too heavy, I've owned two in my time, lively and fun. You can go as complicated or as simple as you like, you can build them out of wood, carbon, or anything in between. The double floors have certainly solved the issue of swamping that the single floor boats have after capsizing. |

The RS200/400 killed of some of the fleet I imagin. Even though the 12 is a far superior boat!

Hey guys
Im very very seriously looking at buying a National 12 from Aardvark racing early next year. Was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the boat and the people in the fleet. Although it doesn't have a spinnaker, I'm suprised it doesn't have a seemingly bigger following? It just seems such a fantastic boat.... How come there are more lightweight people like me flocking towards it? Is there something I'm missing? I'd be really interested to hear if there are any negative views. Doug H |
