I'd have no issues sailing without mainsheet cleat if my boat had a self tacking jib and the crew had the mainsheet upwind...

Can you move the elastic point on the boat?(bloody SMOD boats)

Otherwise what granite said grasp the sheet in the 'V' between your thumb and index finger. the other four fingers for your handle. and turn your thumb towards the centre of the boat. it should work a treat.

Is the sheet handed to you by the crew before you tack or are you working the sheet upwind?

he's got an 800 but im not sure how he and his crew share tasks.
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

Well the crew isn't allowed to take the main in the 800 I don't think so I guess he has to have it all the time!

Billpayer, if you're in an 800 then may i suggest steve irish's website.  It has videos and detailed step by step photo sequencing for all manouevures in an 800

He's been the top 800 guy for a fairly long time now so he cant be going far wrong.

Mike, thanks for answering for me, been otherwise occupied the last few days. Yes it is an 800 and as suggested by a few, I have now been and bought the Higher and Faster DVD, so will study that. The last post from Doug.H suggesting the Steve Irish web site also looks good, thanks for that, I'll start trying them out and see how it all goes. Good thing at the moment, is that it is hot, the water is warm and swimming is rather nice at the moment.

swimming is nice, 1 and a quarter forward flips off the break water at half tide arent though . good luck bp lets see you winning the club races .

Upwind if its choppy the helms arm round the crew helps to keep both of you on the side (only if crew has the main)..
