Who knows. SMODs are not at all popular with ISAF reps from some countries where they have sailboat industries but not big SMOD companies. How many of those countries there are and how many votes they count for is another matter of course. And F18s are not very popular internationally outside a very few countries where there are *loads*. |

So is the intention to be a single manufacturer one design (as I interpret from the 49er reference) or one design (as it currently actually is, like a 470)? If it is the SMOD route, will the sailmaker, hull builder and ittings supplier be subject to a competitive tender process, or will Marstrom and North be given it on a plate because they are currently the biggest names? Could be bad news for Graham Eeles and quite a few sailmakers if that's the case.

Not sure it will be too difficult. AImost all have Marstrom boats already; the masts are already SMOD; Making sails one design is a case of buying a set, and I assume deck fit out will still be free. Quali series will simply be a case of re-starting the system that was used last time.
Do not see this bit as difficult. Changing the minds of the mandarins at the ISAF may prover more difficult as they are already commited the the original (flawed IMO) decision to drop the catamaran from the schedule.

It's still going to be very difficult for them to make it to 2012 - they've got to decide to do it, design/write the rules, get the fleet to migrate (presumably some will have to buy new boats or at least a bit of new gear), prove to ISAF/IOC that it's got the goods, THEN have enough regattas to get a decent selection process up and running.
"Eliminate class rule loopholes" - I bet they loved the whole upwind spinnaker fiasco in Beijing... and that'll take a bit of forgetting by ISAF and the IOC. Brave move, definitely. |

That is a pretty bold move for the T's. Who's going to build what bits? |

Hi All
The structure of the Tornado
class has gone through many changes over the past 11 months. The Tornado
Class/Multihull community became to complacent believing that multihull was safe
and would always be part of the Olympic program, this lead to a major shock to
us all at the 2007 Annual ISAF meeting in November. There has been a lot of
work done to overturn this decision. It was decided that the ITA needed a fresh
new look and a more hands on approach within ISAF. At the 2008 ITA AGM in New Zealand
in February a new committee was elected based on current high profile sailors
within the class to make ourselves more presentable to ISAF and improve the
working relationship. The first assignment was the ISAF mid years meeting,
where we had a huge mountain to climb, firstly in changing their feeling and
perception of our discipline, and to reinstate the class back into the 2012
Olympics. A very successful job was done on the first part of this mission, and
due to the lobbying of ourselves and other multihull enthusiasts we managed to
convince ISAF council not to reaffirm their November 2012 Olympic decision on a
simple majority. Unfortunately due to ISAF regulations we need a 2/3 majority
to change which at this stage was a to bigger hurdle.
Regards The ITA Committee |
