A skiff is ONLY one of the Australian 12ft, 16ft, or 18ft skiffs. Aswell as the historical 6, 8, 10, 14, etc. Skiff are boats which have directly developed from the Australian open boats.

A 49er is a 49er
A Cherub is a Cherub

If a 12ft skiff isn't a skiff, then what is it?

49ers, RS800s, Cherubs, etc. may be skiff like in performance, but they're not skiffs.

Skiff classes have a history, and this isn't something that can bought by RS. The term has been ripped off and used in some marketing bull sh*t, that it appears the majority of the Scottish Skiff Racing has tuned into.

I think a boat that can plane on all points of sailing, is a fairly good definition.  Although its not perfect, as if the wind gets to force5+ certain other boats can manage planing upwind.....

edit: just seen strawberrys post above
but Surely now that the cherub with its new rig and newer hull designs coming through are farily similar toa  12ft skiff, are the cherubs still not skiffs??
The differences between a brand new (new rules) cherub and a 12ft skiff to a casual onlooker would be extremely hard to define.

So does that make a 505 a skiff?

I see your point about what the Official skiffs are and how other boats have simply been branded this for sales purposes.  But is it not fair to say that the word 'Skiff' has taken on a slightly new meaning.  When the word skiff is mentioned, we all have a type of boat, type of hull shape in our head (whether or not it be correct) and weve attached this word to it so is it really wrong of us to use this word as a means of common understanding??
To me, when i think of skiff, i imagine a relatively flat bottomed boat designed for planing.

I think this is, in effect, "stealing" the word. And I don't think it's fair on the "real" skiff sailors in Australia. They are very passionate about their class and it's history. They get extremely peeved off at the manufacturers who hijack the term to market a SMOD of average performance, purely for the aim of making profits.

And yes, I do think that's wrong.

Well lets be the first to invent a brand new word.  Ive just checked Finter on dictionary.com and thats free, although there's bound to be a better word than Finter.

I think you're using the austrailian definition of "skiff" and not the english definition.  In the UK, skiffs have been around for hundreds of years and were originally small rowing boats for hunting/fishing.  Whilst you are quite right that in austrailia the word "skiff" refer to 12s' 16s' & 18s'.  As this is a UK based forum I suggest we used english as our language, not austrailian or american.  If someone wants to call their boat a skiff whats the problem?  Lets not get snobby about using the word skiff!
