why do b14's need carbon wings? I thought they were supposed to be limiting development?

They are just prototypes.  The Australian fleet cannot scource high enough quality aluminium tubing of the right sizes to build the wing any more, so the class are considering the option of moving to carbon wings.  They are lighter, more robust and will ultimately last longer, and hopefully in time be cheaper.  For now there are two trial sets in each hemisphere and these may or may not be used in some form at this January's world championships.  Their introduction and adoption will go to a class vote and will have to be ratified by ISAF before they can go into general circulation.  There introduction, if approved, will be phased and corrector weights will be used, as well as a provision to use one of each type of wing for a number of years until the fleet have made the switch.  The switch is not being driven by a drive for performance gain (although it is a happy side effect) it is as a result of wanting to create a better quality, more consistant, product.  Hope this makes sence.  I am running a page on facebook which will have updates on the wings, my boat, and the worlds, search for B14, you'll find it.  < =text/>

Just in case you are interested to know what it is, it's the new L4 12ft Skiff design, which is a development of the L3 R Class hull.
