What is the situation regarding RS600 masts? I'm in the market for a cheapish 600 but I'm worried that buying an older boat (with the older mast) will be a bad move since a new mast is £995!

The LDC site also has parts for the 'new' angel mast. I thought there were just 2, the angel one that breaks and the superspars one?

Just get the seller to separate the mast and check it hasn't got an alloy sleeve in the join...

[Just to elaborate on this later - early RS600 masts had an alloy sleeve that was a key part of the join where you removed a mast section for the shorter rig option. An alloy sleeve inside a carbon tube is very bad news in marine environment because electrolytic corrosion erodes the aluminium, which "fizzes" as it oxidises and expands. When it expands it tends to break up the resin/fibre join in the carbon mast, and bang...

Now only last week I was examoning the mast join of an earky 600 mast which has the alloy sleeve, but has always been sailed inland, and there were no noticeable problems, and probably there would continue to be no problems if the boat continued to be sailed inland. AT a sea club however...

What I don't know is whether all the Angel masts had the alloy sleeve or not, but inspecting that area is obviously important, and for Inland sailing it suggests that if the sleeve is in good order it may well continue that way. At a sea club I'd avoid anything wih the alloy sleeve...

Just checked the ldc site - superspars rs600 mast rigged with diamonds only £995

However when i spoke to RMW on the subject of buying an RS600 they did say that the main buying consideration should be the mast and sail, as 95% of the speed is affected by these. If the mast and sail are not tip top then you should make allowences for buying new, assuming you want to be competitive on the circuit etc. also the later foils are better - you can tell as the trailing edge is 1.5mm I think
hope this helps

General opinion around the circuit seems to be that either mast can be competitive and several people do still sail with the older angel mast. The angel mast has been the cause of high insurance prices for the 600 for since its release. As SS masts have gradually replaced angels through breakages insurance costs are coming down.
I guess if buying an older 600 you can take your chances and claim if necessary (although your future premiums will go up)!
The boat is quite a tricky little beasty to master so keeping the aforementioned out of the wet stuff is far more important initally! Superb boats tho, and just about the most bang for buck around!!

Last year i did some racing against a friend, ive a superspar and he had an angel mast.  After racing in various conditions (light marginal trapezing up to top end of a force 4) we found there to be no Noticable performance difference between the masts.  Ive no doubt there are people who believe the contradictary but IMHO i dont believe there to be any performance difference.
As for the concern of Angels prone to breaking easily - This is no doubt a fair concern as (im under the impression) this was the primary reason superspars took over.  However my friend who had an angel, had his boat for about a year and after selling it around october last year i believe the mast is STILL in action with its new owner.  Plus there is another 600 at my home club with an Angel mast and although he hasnt had it for long, the boat is fairly old, but the mast is still going strong.

Hi Everyone,

Just to clean a few things up. A new RS600 is SuperSpar and cost £995.00 including diamonds, and £1,100.00 including all rigging.

There are two different versions of the Angel mast the original ones which have the aluminium sleeve for the stump, and the slightly later ones which finished production about six years ago that have a carbon sleeve for the stump. Just for information the later Angel mast has a different sail feeder to the early ones, it was bad wording on our website I have now changed it.

If you have any questions please get in contact.

Cheers Adam Broughton
