That's a joke by the way - I'm not getting sucked into another of your 'myth' debates.
It gets worse. The earth is expanding due to the core's radioactive decomosition and the plates are shifting this growth equatorially - sometimes known as equatorial spread. As we become more pear shaped we account the expansion to different things...... just like my wife. The figure for each cause could never be traced. The term global warming means.....warming of the globe - shock. It is warming so there is no myth, but why is not known by me. As for the 2 meters around your house.... the tides in UK's latitude represent a 1.3mm rise it sea so, depends where you live but it is possible in some places. |

If that's the case, the radius of the earth is expanding by 2.2mm per annum, if the same volume of ice is melting every year, the rate at which sea levels rise will slow, as the same volume of melted water has to effectively spread itself further?! So going by this, in 50 years time the sea will have risen by about 11cm, not 2m as we are often told, my house won't be near the beach in my lifetime!!! |

In the interest of continuing what was - for me at least - a great train of truely 'useless facts' consider this: A recent study led by a Dr Velicogna's, found an annual decrease in Antarctic ice sheet mass of 152 cubic km. "There is a clear loss in the west, whereas the mass of the East Antarctic sheet appears to be constant." This loss of ice equates to an annual rise in the global average sea level of 0.4mm; by contrast, the total rise, due mainly to thermal expansion of seawater, is estimated at about 1.8mm per year. |
