The Contender has a marked increase in speed when planing and pumping effectively brings the windspeed at which planing is possible down thus making it a lot more fun. Also if our class rules are based on this then not pumping puts you at a major disadvantage in both class and handicap racing (the PY is based partly on those that pump).... however I don't see how it can be anything other than confusing to allow some classes to pump and other not! |

Yes, RS 's allow you to touch marks at opens, and it can get confusing when you get back to your club! (I've done it). It's like the Soslow, at the champs you still need a protest flag, and have to do a 720 if you hit a mark, but once back in club racing, standard rules apply. |

We currently allow pumping (over a certain windspeed) in our class rules when a flag is flying and I've always wondered if it meant in handicap racing as well. We also have a vote coming up on the subject. From the 2005 AGM... 8a: Chairman Søren Andreasen proposed that we change the class rules to permit pumping (actually suspension of rule 42 Propulsion) within our class rules. He pointed out that a number of classes have modified their class rules to permit pumping and that ISAF rule making has changed in such a way that it is now necessary to modify the class rules in order that rule 42 be suspended. 37 were in favour, 8 opposed 45 total. 82% in favour. This change must be subjected to worldwide postal ballot and approval by the ISAF. ...not really any the wiser. |

Surely its no different to the situation with RS classes which I'm told can hit marks at their own meetings (is this right ?) but can hardly expect to be permitted the same at 'other' times. Pumping is bound to be emotive - some think if you cannot get people to protest then effectively you should allow it. This happened years ago with many board classes which moved the balance firmly towards the 'brawn' rather than 'tactical' oriented boarders ....... and look what happened to the overall numbers competing. Thin end of the wedge stuff - next as with the boards you start tweaking sails to be most effective when pumping etc etc and eventually it turns into 'air rowing' - nothing wrong with rowing of course if that's what you want but its much more satisfying with real oars - for all involved. Finn was (almost certainly) infringing rule 42. Read the rule and the ISAF interpretations, next time get 2 reliable witnesses and protest. Not protesting in these cases does a lot of harm to the sport, by giving the impression that the cheats rule The Finn guy will get over it Gordon |

I've also had the pleasure of following a pumping finn round the course. Obviously its habit, and they're used to it in a class fleet, but I also wondered how legal it was in a handicap fleet. Obviously I didn't complain at the time - big fellas those finn sailors!

I don't believe class rules apply in a handicap race. Straight ISAF rules unless the SIs say something different. In any case the class rules normally require a flag before the rules change. |
