"The Avatar may give you a clue " really never spotted you sail a contender , do you think I'm blind ? and your name gives a hint too !!!!!!!!!!!!!
! am 6 foot 2 and 18 stone sailed my contender in 45 knots , funny though keelboats were sailing with no 2's .gave up contenders years ago ,too underpowered , got fed up by being passed by toppers in light wind , not just me ! whole class was including someone who went on t o be a notable champ . though to be fair upwind in a blow was sweet .
I have never read so much p*sh in my life , I can't believe that further up the thread folk are debating wether a radial can plane or not , its a flippin laser with slightly smaller sail sailed by a gnat , cause it will plane !!!!!!!!
and as for if a bosun starts to plane its time to go in , if a bosuns planing too late you are allready dead ! |

As i said "At 6' and 15 stone". Hugely over weight (for both the boat and my body) with long levers, 30 knot winds are possible. Am I a super hero.....er no! Stupid without an ounce of common sense......Its one way to stay young! And yes I do usually sail something a bit more powerful. The Avatar may give you a clue |

nicely said, but i think most people sailing picos in that kind of wind are well over the normal weight for a pico and usually sail faster boats. the keel boats on the other hand, crew weight makes less of a difference and they are "light weather" boats as well.

Holy f@K some of the claims as to winds you guys sail in are awe inspiring ," I was jumping off waves in 30 knts in a pico " etc , I must be in the company of super heros !!!!
You guys should have jetted out to America and sorted the girlies in their keelboats in miami (?) or wherever , gr* big report in current Y n Y , they had carnage in 25 Knots and you guys is just getting out your beds ! Spect the instruments on the TP 52s etc are a tad better calibrated than those you guys got ! |

Radials do plane very well even with my 13st and 6ft in them (had a 4.7 planing too)
Just about anything will plane given enough wind (dinghy wise that is). |

I once managed to not only get a Pico planing, but also get it airbourne off the back of a 'wave' - but it was blowing about 30 knots at the time. At 6' and 15 stone its the only time it is possible to have any fun in one |
