I think people find it all a bit likely because, as sure as I like cake, if you were a world champ sailor who earned alot of spondoolies from your career and you had just won a big event in a SMOD 99 out of 100 of you out there would definately say your kit is 'just the same as everyone elses'....... in other words - the race was fair, you won it fair and square, good old sport and all that Jazz. Ben is a pro..... what do you expect from him?

But we're talking about the Olympics - what choice of kit do the Laser sailors get when they arrive ? .Probably very little.

My post was in response to this question:

I was too lazy to make a quote and unaware that taking 1 min to type a post represents 4 new post being placed in this high flying, hot paced cauldron of debate about 'OLYMPICS'. It is great to know we are so keen to keep the posts on topic.... a concern raised by Rick last year in the 'do we need a moderator' thread. The consistency of Laser masts was a discussed subject at the ISAF meeting when (I forget there are so many) the Laser was up for selection. I feel it is a relevant now as ever if racing is going to be equal and 'fair' - in the OLYMPICs.

If we were to review all the classes this is what I'd choose ... (ones in bold are my additions to Rick's opinions)

1 Mens single - Laser (50 boats- top 30 qualifiying nations send 1 competitor, and 20 are left open)
2 Womens single - Laser Radial (with carbon top mast to lower competitve weight) (50 boats- top 30 qualifiying nations send 1 competitor, and 20 are left open)
3 Open single - MPS/RS700 (50 boats- top 30 qualifiying nations send 1 competitor, and 20 are left open)
4 Womens double - 29xx (25 boats top 15 nations, plus 10 open)
6 Multihull - Tornado Sport (25 boats top 15 nations, plus 10 open)
7 Keelboat - Laser SB3 (could have mixed crew and replaces Yngling & Star) (16 boats, 10 top nations, plus 6 open)

...and because I think there should be at least 1 conventional spinny boat, for the time being:

8 Open double - Fireball (25 boats top 15 nations, plus 10 open)

what happened to mens double? and i think it should be like that apart from the need for more cats. especialy if you want it to be "exciting". i am not a cat sailor so i have no prejudices here but cats do go faster. however i am against the sport being changed for tv. SAILING WILL NEVER BE A GOOD SPECTATOR SPORT FOR NON SAILORS and its not even that good to watch as a sailor but maybe thats because im impatient. finally i wish people luck in trying to ecplain to non sailors how exciting sailing realy is.

Accidentaly missed off the Men's double, I think it should be the 49er.

I disagree with more, cats, they are less tippy (side to side anyway), and to the viewer i doubt the sensatin of speed will be all that different.

Surely the 49er must be on any wish list, especially if the 29er is to be included. There's no mens doublehander which the 49er is perfect for

Why not limit the number of classes and have weight bands

In other words have

Laser Men lightweight less than 70kg

Laser Men Heavy Weight greater than 70kg

Laser Female lightweight less than 60kg

Laser Female heavy weight greater than 60kg

Have as many weight divisions as you want and repeat the formula for windsurfing.. Forget about 2 handed, cats, and keel boats to keep costs down.

This will be easy to understand and cheap to set up for all countries and host nations.

By the way it does not have to be a laser - you could substitute a new class of singlehander with an asssymetric and adjustable wings (no lead). The wings would all be set at one width per weight band and would only race against others set up the same way. In other words it is not for weight equalisation.
